    The City of Reno has an exciting career opportunity waiting for you! We are recruiting for a Senior Parks Maintenance Worker. This position is within the Parks Maintenance Division of the Parks and Recreation Department. Hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur. APPLY TODAY!

    This position will lead and oversee the work of lower level staff who perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on City parks and related facilities including turf maintenance, landscaping, equipment operation and repair, and grounds keeping duties. This position will participate in the more complex and difficult work relative to their assigned areas of responsibility.

    Examples of Essential Functions

    • Lead, plan, train, and review the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair functions on City parks and related facilities including turf maintenance, landscaping, equipment repair, and grounds keeping duties.
    • Train assigned employees in their areas of work including parks maintenance methods, procedures, and techniques.
    • Supervise the use, care and operation of appropriate maintenance and grounds equipment including, but not limited to, hand and power tools, saws, mowers, weed eaters, hedge clippers, hammers and shovels.
    • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
    • Lead and participate in cleaning and maintaining facilities, restrooms, and shelters; check and replenish tissue, towels and soap; gather and remove garbage and litter from grounds and facilities.
    • Inspect park equipment and facilities for needed repairs including playground equipment, picnic tables, fences, water fountains and playing fields.
    • Oversee and participate in the cultivation and maintenance of ornamental planting and the development of new landscaped areas; transplant and cultivate plants and flowers.
    • Oversee and participate in maintaining turf, lawn, and landscaped areas including mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizing, and pest control; maintain landscape vegetation in assigned area including appropriate pesticide application according to federal and state laws and protocols.
    • Oversee and participate in monitoring and repairing electronic irrigation systems and associated control devices; assist in the installation of new irrigation systems as required.
    • Operate the full range of light and heavy maintenance and grounds equipment including tractors, backhoe, bobcat, dump trucks, boom trucks, forklift, riding lawn mower and snow removal equipment.
    • Oversee and participate in planting and maintaining flower beds; prune and trim hedges, flowers, shrubs and trees.
    • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
    • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
    • Perform related duties as required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.

    Education:
    • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

    Experience:
    • Two years of increasingly responsible grounds keeping or park maintenance experience at a level comparable to a Parks Maintenance Worker II with the City of Reno.

    License or Certificate:
    • Valid driver's license.

    Examination Process:
    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online written skills test along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:
    • Written Skills Test = 80%
    • Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 20%
    Online Assessment Details:
    Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the online assessment once the recruitment has closed. This test will be self-administered with no proctor, which means candidates will be able to complete it online at their convenience during the designated testing window.

All assessments must be completed within the designated testing window to move forward in the hiring process.

    Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
    The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked "QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.
    • Responses to your T&E questions should be consistent with the information given in your application details. Answers are subject to verification.
    • Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.
    • In order to receive credit for education or training, you must attach copies of your transcripts, diploma, or relevant certificates to your online application.
    • Resumes or questionnaires uploaded as attachments to the application will not be accepted in lieu of completing each question online.
    • "See Resume" or "See above," etc., are not qualifying responses and will not be considered.
    • Changes or corrections to your responses cannot be made once your application packet has been submitted.

    In the event of tie scores resulting from an open competitive examination (Rule VII, Section 7), candidates will be provided a rank preference in the following order:
    Classified employees with established veteran status Classified employees without veteran status Non-classified employees and external candidates with established veteran status. This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at time of application.

    Appointment and Certification:
    Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
