    Position Description

    The Tacoma Venues & Events Department (TVE) is seeking to hire a full-time Maintenance Chief to join the Operations Department for the Tacoma Dome and Greater Tacoma Convention Center.     Under direction of the Deputy Director of Operations, this is skilled work, in the performance and supervision of the set-up/tear-down and maintenance functions in the Department of Tacoma Venues & Events. Responsibilities include supervising employees in the operation of specialized equipment, technical systems, and general custodial and maintenance services throughout the department's facilities. This position will also be responsible for managing and monitoring preventative maintenance work, daily work orders, and long-term work orders and projects. Incumbents may be assigned to different sections specializing in either the overall set-up/tear-down or maintenance functions.

    This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing systems in special purpose facilities.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Recommend and manage projects to assist in energy saving, productivity efficiencies, and long-term maintenance of the facility
    • Supervises the operation of specialized maintenance equipment, e.g., piping, sweepers, scrubbers, lawnmowing equipment, HVAC equipment
    • Manage and monitor preventative maintenance work, daily work orders, and long-term work orders and projects
    • Supervises in work involved in the clean-up and care of a special purpose City facility such as setting up tables, chairs, stages, risers, mowing, fertilizing, watering, sweeping parking lots, or maintaining landscaped areas
    • Monitors and supervises adjustments and repairs to equipment associated with the facility
    • Maintain a preventative maintenance and work order program consisting of computerized work order and record keeping systems
    • Estimate and requisition supplies and materials required for maintenance work


    Qualifications

    Graduation from high school and four years' experience in building and maintenance repair in a multi-purpose facility.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    Valid Washington State driver's license with maintenance thereafter.
    Valid forklift certification within six (6) months of appointment to classification.

    Working Conditions
    Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments at multiple sport and entertainment venues and is subject to adverse weather conditions, fumes/chemicals, lifting up to 75 pounds, standing, walking, stooping, crawling, and climbing a variety of equipment.

    Work Hours:
    Non-traditional work hours are required for this position. This position requires the employee to work on a variety of shifts, including day, swing and graveyard. Employees must be available and willing to work on any shift, and on any day of the week (including weekends and holidays).

    Knowledge & Skills

    SKILLS
    • Custodial and maintenance practices, materials and tools used in connection with special purpose facilities; e.g., ball parks, exhibition halls, stadiums and multi-purpose facilities. Sound, lighting and heating/cooling systems.
    • Participate in, and supervise personnel engaged in custodial, maintenance and set-up/tear-down operations.
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Deal tactfully with the public.
    • Inspect buildings and grounds to determine need for major repair work.
    • Work a non-standard work day/workweek under time constraints and meet deadlines.
    • Computer literate.
    OPERATIONS/LEADERSHIP
    • Assists in coaching employees in proper work procedures and processes.
    • Reviews daily team operations and makes recommendations to division heads regarding process and procedures.
    • Independent decision-making authority during conversions regarding event setup details and staff work assignments. Position provides feedback to and takes direction from TVE Operations Supervisor & TVE Director of Operations.

    This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Teamsters Local 117. Current, permanent employees must successfully complete a six-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
