    This recruitment will establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill vacancies as they occur.

    This recruitment process is open on a continuous basis and will close after receipt of the first 100 applications from qualified applicants. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply immediately. Only online applications will be accepted for this recruitment. The first review of applications will be completed on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 or after receipt of 100 applications, whichever occurs first. Applicants appearing best qualified based upon a review of the application and response to supplemental questions will be invited to participate in the testing process.

    This is a part-time, at-will position exempt from the classified service. This position will be serving the adult and teen division of the library.

    Under limited supervision, performs a variety of library administrative support and designated technical-related library work.

The ideal candidate for Library Assistant will perform varied and complex library administrative support tasks for the department and be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Reporting to a Senior Librarian, the individual selected for this position should possess excellent organizational skills, enjoy delivering warm and welcoming customer service both internally and externally, and represent the Recreation, Parks, and Library Department in a professional way when interacting with the public, other staff, city executives, and elected officials.

    Essential Job Functions

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
    Positions in this classification typically perform duties at a level of complexity represented by the following types of responsibilities:

    • Coordinates selected activities within the library;
    • Develops and conducts library programs;
    • Maintains library records;
    • Assists the public in the use of the library and library resources;
    • Provides information and/or orientation to library facilities, equipment and services;
    • Instructs patrons on the use of computerized card catalogs, on-line public access catalog, reference materials and equipment, and assists patrons in researching and locating materials;
    • Assists in ordering, cataloging, classification and display of books and materials;
    • Assists in the maintenance and replacement of existing books, periodicals and materials;
    • Develops selected documents, bibliographies, records and publicity materials for library program and/or department;
    • Maintains records and filing systems; and
    • Provides guidance and training to other staff.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    Knowledge of:
    • Practices of library operations;
    • Principles and practices of office administration;
    • Typical office equipment, including personal computer and standard office computer programs including word processing, database and spreadsheet applications;
    • Library software;
    • Cataloging rules, regulations and resources;
    • Dewey decimal system;
    • Book processing procedures; and
    • Automated library systems.
    Skill in:
    • Operating typical office equipment, including personal computer and standard office computer programs including word processing, database and spreadsheet applications;
    • English composition, grammar and punctuation;
    • Alphabetizing and numerically sorting materials;
    • Composing letters and preparing a variety of reports, using appropriate format and computer software;
    • Presenting ideas and concepts orally and in writing;
    • Conducting research and preparing clear, concise and comprehensive reports;
    • Following oral and written instructions and procedures;
    • Utilizing public relation techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints; and
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, other City employees and the public.
    Working Conditions:
    Typical library environment. Afternoon, evening, Friday, and Saturday hours are required.

    Licensing/Certification Requirements:
    None.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:
    A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience: T wo (2) years increasingly responsible library experience and/or K-12 school experience.

    Education: Graduation from high school or GED and college coursework in library science, liberal arts, or education.

    Supplemental Information

    Individuals in this classification are required to successfully pass a background check that complies with Public Resources Code section 5164, which mandates that a city that hires a person to work at a park, playground, recreational center or beach, in a position having supervisory or disciplinary authority over a minor, shall complete an application that inquires whether that individual has been convicted of specified criminal offenses.

    Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of El Segundo employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.

    Hourly employees may not exceed 999 hours in a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30) unless previously authorized. There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.
