THIS IS A SPECIAL DISTRICTS POSITION
The Department of Public Works, Special Districts - Water and Sanitation Division is recruiting for Water Treatment Plant Operators II , who assist in the operation and maintenance of Water Treatment Systems. These positions are assigned to Special Districts only; work sites are located throughout the County, including high/low deserts, mountains, and valleys.
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the safe and economical operation, maintenance, and supervision of all water distribution, water treatment, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment facilities; and to perform related work as required. Positions of this class are characterized by having lead worker responsibilities. Supervise and participate in the operation of water treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water; monitor gauges, meters and control panels; observe variations in operating conditions, interpreting meter and gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirement. Optimizes water/wastewater treatment system’s processes to ensure regulatory compliance and water quality objectives are maintained at all times. Supervise and participate in the collection of samples and perform routine laboratory tests and analyses.

Working Conditions: Applicants must be able to perform heavy manual labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions; work in desert and mountainous areas, remote locations, and other locations as needed; have the ability to drive in all weather conditions; and work weekends and holidays and respond to emergency calls as needed. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and have the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over, and crawl for extended periods in the performance of job duties for this position.
Health and Physical: Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties established by the San Bernardino County Special Districts Department.
Certification: Must obtain State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Treatment Operator Grade T3 within twenty-four (24) months of employment and a D2 certification within eighteen (18) months of employment or be terminated.
License: Must obtain and maintain a CA Class A unrestricted driver license with tanker endorsement within eighteen (18) months of employment or be terminated.
Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. A valid CA driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance is required at time of appointment.
Assignment: Employees on call must respond by phone within one (1) hour. Employees may be assigned to one region but are expected to work any site located throughout the County, to meet the Department's needs. Incumbents are required to be available on-call evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Sites/locations encompass the mountains, the deserts, and the valleys.

Minimum Requirements
Must meet ALL of the following requirements:
T2 Certification:
Current Water Treatment Operator Grade T2 , issued by the CA State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). (Attach copy to application.)
D1 Certification:
Current Water Distribution Operator Grade D1 , issued by the CA SWRCB. (Attach copy to application.)
Experience:
Two (2) years of recent experience (within the last 5 years) in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a Water Treatment facility.
License:
Must possess a valid CA Class C or higher driver license.
NOTE: Copy of required certificates MUST be attached to the application.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess CA SWRCB Water Distribution Operator Grade D3 and Water Treatment Operator Grade T3 certifications, as well as a CA Class A driver license. Possession of additional water certifications is highly desired. In addition, possession of San Bernardino County Back Flow certification and experience using SCADA computer program is also desired.
