    The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is recruiting for Wildland Fuels Specialist, who, under general direction, plans, manages and coordinates the project and/or program management activities related to wildland protection, forestry conservation, vegetation management programs and fire prevention measures within the Fire Department’s Wildland Division; performs related duties as required.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Physical Ability: The employees in this class will be responsible for performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions. The work in this class will demand heavy physical labor for periods of varying duration under hazardous conditions and in all weather conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, hiking trails, working in steep, uneven terrain, working in confined areas, and working in smoke-filled limited visibility environments. This position will require the strength and physical abilities necessary to perform the duties of a fire fighter as specified by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and National Wildland Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. Training includes successful completion of the NWCG Missoula Interagency Hotshot Physical Ability. Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the safety health and physical condition standards.

    Positions: Applicants must be willing to work anywhere within San Bernardino County. Employees must adhere to the provisions of the County Fire and Special Districts Dress Code, which prohibits all visible tattoos.

    Certification: Must obtain S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface and S-336 Tactical Decision Making in the Wildland Fire within 24 months of hire or may be terminated.

    License: Must possess and maintain a current CA Class C (or higher) driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance at time of appointment.

    Minimum Requirements

    Experience: Four (4) years of full-time experience (duties equivalent to a San Bernardino County Fire Protection District Fire Suppression Aide III class or higher) primarily performing activities related to wildland protection, forestry conservation, vegetation management programs, and fire prevention measures within a public agency/fire department’s Wildland Division.

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Forestry, Environmental Science, or other closely related field and possess knowledge of plants/botany, chaparral fuel types, related wildland fuels, and GIS/ESRI software/products. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface and S-336 Tactical Decision making in the Wildland Fire certificates.
