    Definition

    Come join our team as a full-time Permit Technician I/II in our Community Development Department . Check out this video to see what it is like working for the City of Newport Beach!

    Currently there is one vacancy that may be filled at either the Permit Technician I or II level depending on the applicant's qualifications.

    Selection Components:
    1. Application Evaluation: This recruitment will remain open on a continuous basis. The first review of applications will take place on October 14, 2024 .

    2. Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of November 5, 2024 . Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future full-time Permit Technician I/II vacancies as they occur.

    Salary:
    Permit Technician I Full-time: $5,227 to $7,711 per month
    Permit Technician II Full-time: $6,045 to $ 8,940 per month

    Career Path:
    The career path for this position includes: Permit Technician I, Permit Technician II, and Permit Counter Supervisor.

    Schedule:
    This position may work a 5/40 or 4/10 schedule.

    CalPERS:
    The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of pay toward retirement costs.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    Permit Technician I: Two years of building industry and/or public works customer service experience is required. Prior building construction-related experience is desirable.

    Permit Technician II: Two years of experience in the processing and review of building and/or public works plans and permit applications.

    Education:

    Permit Technician I & II: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Building-related training or course work is desirable.

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATE:

    Permit Technician I & II: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. ICC Permit Technician certificate is desirable.

    The City of Newport Beach is located in the coastal center of Orange County, with Los Angeles County to the north and San Diego County to the south. It has an estimated permanent population of 86,738 but during the summer months, the population grows to more than 100,000 with 20,000 to 100,000 tourists daily.

    The City of Newport Beach was incorporated September 1, 1906 and the current City Charter was adopted in 1954. The City operates under a Council-Manager form of government. Its seven City Council Members are elected by district, but are voted on by the population as a whole. They serve four-year terms. The Council consists of the Mayor and six other members and is responsible for policy-making, passing local ordinances, adopting the budget, appointing committees and hiring the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
