    The Veteran Services Division is looking for an awesome Veteran Services Officer (VSO). The Veterans Services Officer will assist veterans, veteran spouses and their dependents identify and apply for benefits earned through their military service. Benefits include, but are not limited to, disability compensation, pension, medical assistance, education scholarships, burial and/or transportation assistance.

    Essential functions:
    • Conduct client/claimants interviews
    • Develop Claims for submission to the Federal Veteran's Affairs Administration
    • Maintain Records for Follow-up and/or Statistical Analysis
    • Assist veterans and veteran families answer basic questions over the phone and/or email, working the VSO front desk and/or assisting the Customer Services Representative with administrative duties
    • Position(s) may perform other duties in addition to the above as assigned by management

    Wake County’s Department of Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization goal is to ensure that quality affordable housing is available and accessible for all Wake County residents. As the population and economy continue to grow in Wake County, the need for affordable housing development and preservation increases. Not only do more units of affordable housing need to be built, housing services must be provided to support families and individuals to access or maintain safe, decent, affordable housing. Affordable housing is also critical to preserving Wake County’s economic competitiveness by offering housing for workers at all income levels, supporting housing stability and economic opportunity for its residents and furthering Wake County’s commitment to healthy and inclusive growth. The Division of Veterans Services is under the Housing Affordability & Community Revitalization department and that the VSO team is an integral part of supporting over 55K veterans and their families that call Wake County their home. The Department’s programs include: Community Revitalization, Development Financing, Homeless and Prevention Services, Emergency Shelter, Support Services and Permanent Supportive Housing.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Bachelor's degree
    • One year of experience working with military or veterans’ services
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    • Ability to assimilate information, decide and recommend the best course of action for each individual case
    • Ability to facilitate request through the state NCDVA and federal VA offices
    • Solid relationship building skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in local language
    • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms and other office procedures and terminology
    • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
    • Stay current on knowledge of federal and commercial healthcare market dynamics and trends

    Emergency Service Worker Statement
