    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Provides supervision to psychiatrists, multidisciplinary and ancillary staff in the provision of mental health services to clients in accordance with standards and scope of practice of psychiatry.

    Essential Job Functions

    Performs administrative responsibilities which include such duties as budget preparation for the section, determining equipment and supply needs, personnel responsibilities, developing and revising work procedures to expedite workload or improve level of service, and screening work.

    Plans, assigns, directs, supervises and coordinates the work of the multidisciplinary staff providing mental health treatment and psychiatric services.

    Formulates policies, procedures, and plans and directs the programs and medical work of the section or assists in such activities for a division of a medical department.

    Evaluates the overall activities of a program or unit including methods and techniques of departmental initiatives and protocols to enhance and improve client care.

    Makes recommendations regarding program policies and procedures, and implements changes in program.

    Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for patients and reviews the care prescribed by staff physicians, resident physicians, and interns.

    Functions independently in performing psychiatric evaluations, including determining if probable cause is met to initiate detention under WIC 5150, and develops comprehensive psychiatric treatment plans.

    Participates in the review of systems and processes in the unit or program and provides input into formulating corrective action plans to ensure quality of care.

    Evaluates the need for psychotropic medications; prescribes medication and monitor their overall effect and may administer medication/s, when needed.

    Participates as a member of a collaborative professional team in the training program of interns and resident physicians.

    Evaluates the performance of assigned health care staff and makes recommendations for appropriate action.

    Confers with consultants and makes recommendations regarding care of patients, medical and diagnostic work preformed, and coordinates the work of consulting physicians.

    Supervises the maintenance of records and the compilation and preparation of reports.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in Psychiatry or equivalent training* -AND- one (1) year of experience in medical practice, post residency training, teaching, or investigative work.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    *Equivalent training is defined as that training which the appropriate American Certifying Board formally recognizes in writing as being equivalent.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Additional points will be awarded for experience in excess of the Selection Requirements.

    LICENSE:
    California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

    Information pertaining to the completion of residency program.

    Information pertaining to the required California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate.
    Applicants who have the required California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California MUST attach a legible copy of their certificate to the application
    at the time of filing or email to the analyst within fifteen (15) calendar days of filing online or your application will be rejected.
    The required license and/or certificate MUST be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted licenses and/or certificates will NOT be accepted.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications based upon application information, weighted 100%

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
