    Support Safe Journeys: Join Our Safe Routes to School Team

    About the Opportunity
    Join the City of Palo Alto as an Associate Transportation Planner and become a key player in shaping our community's sustainable future. In this role, you will:
    • Lead youth-focused initiatives within our acclaimed Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, specifically targeting middle and high school programs and infrastructure
    • Work as part of a three-person SRTS team, reporting to the Transportation Planning Manager
    • Develop and implement innovative transportation solutions supporting Palo Alto's aggressive mode-shift and climate action goals
    • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including school administrators, transportation agencies, City departments, parents, and advocacy groups
    • Utilize the SRTS model of the six E's: Education, Engineering, Encouragement, Engagement, Equity, and Evaluation
    • Coordinate and facilitate monthly City/School Traffic Safety Committee meetings
    • Develop partnerships with youth groups/committees and support the Tinsley volunteer student transfer program
    • Implement special projects such as coordinating student volunteers, bike rides, in-school bike repair, and providing transportation career resources

    Who We're Looking For
    We seek a capable professional with:
    • A Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or a related field from an accredited college or university
    • Two years of related experience in urban, conservation, or transportation planning, a bicycle/pedestrian-related field, or Safe Routes to School-related programming in either a professional or volunteer capacity
    • Strong analytical and communication skills, especially with secondary school students, school staff, and parent community representatives
    • Enthusiasm for sustainable transportation and community engagement
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and work well across departments
    • A valid California Driver's License

    Essential Duties:

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Prepares reports, which include all necessary research, on planning and transportation studies for appointed boards, commissions, committees, the City Council or other City staff.
    • Prepares revised elements to the Comprehensive Plan.
    • Makes public presentations before appointed boards, commissions, committees, community groups, and the City Council
    • Maintains Planning or Transportation Division data files.
    Related Functions: Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
    • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies or related field from an accredited college or university
    and
    • Two years of related experience in urban, conservation, or transportation planning

    Special Requirements:
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
