    DEFINITION
    Performs journey-level elevator and escalator maintenance and repair work.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
    Positions allocable to this class work under the guidance of a Senior Elevator Mechanic or a higher-level elevator mechanic supervisor and are responsible for performing journey-level elevator and escalator maintenance and repair work. Positions in this class maintain, inspect, and repair operating and safety features of elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators and maintain and inspect electronic control panels, switches, relays, signal devices, and other related equipment. These positions also are responsible for the inspection and repair of hoist motors and machinery, governors, door mechanisms, cables, hydraulic buffers, pumps, rails, and other related equipment. Incumbents in these positions must exercise a knowledge of elevator and escalator maintenance, inspection, and repair procedures, techniques, and safety practices and of the equipment and tools necessary to perform the maintenance and repair work.

    Essential Job Functions

    Tests and adjusts general operating and safety features of elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators such as speed, acceleration, leveling, braking, emergency stop, and alarm bell.

    Maintains and repairs electronic control panels, switches, relays, signal devices, electric motors, generators and related equipment.

    Inspects, adjusts, maintains, and repairs hoist motors and machinery, governors, door mechanisms, cables, hydraulic buffers, pumps, brakes, rails, guides and related equipment.

    Determines the need for and performs major overhaul or replacement of defective equipment.

    Maintains work records.

    Maintains tools and equipment.

    Drives automotive equipment to work sites.

    Supervises trainees and helpers, as required.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    OPTION I:
    Completion of a recognized elevator mechanic training program* of at least four year's duration.

    OPTION II:
    Five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of elevators or escalators, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.**

    VISION: Keen color perception.

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License*** is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a valid California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

    Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

    LICENSE INFORMATION
    ***Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

    CERTIFICATE
    A valid Los Angeles City Certificate of Registration as a Journey Elevator Mechanic.****

    Effective June 30, 2003, certification, temporary certification, or emergency certification by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health, as a Certified Competent Conveyance (elevator) Mechanic (CCCM).****

    A City of Los Angeles Regulation 4 Certificate may be required for testing Life/Safety systems in County buildings located within the city limits of Los Angeles. Life/Safety systems are defined as: fire alarms, automatic-closing fire assemblies, elevator recall, fire suppression, and emergency-power systems.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
    *To qualify under Option I, you must submit a photocopy of the certificate of completion of a recognized Elevator Mechanic training program with your online application at the time of filing, or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing . Please submit documentation to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org and indicate your name, the exam title, and the exam number. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection. Training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Postsecondary, and Vocational Education.

    **Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

    ****In order to qualify, applicants MUST submit a copy of the required Los Angeles City Certificate of Registration as a Journey Elevator Mechanic -AND- a Certified Competent Conveyance (elevator) Mechanic (CCCM) certificate issued by the State of California, Division of Occupational Safety and Health with your online application at the time of filing, or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your online application.     DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    Credit will be given to applicants who possess DESIRABLE qualifications and indicate so on their employment application at the time of filing.

    Experience beyond the minimum requirements in the maintenance and repair of elevators and escalators at the journey level.

    Experience with troubleshooting for traction and hydraulic elevators.

    Experience with maintenance and repair of escalators.

    Experience with elevator adjusting (specific troubleshooting of floor tables, leveling, speeds, solid state, or microprocessor controls).

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The supplemental questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%.

    CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you served in the military and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran's Credit. To receive this credit, please include a copy of your DD214 Form issued by the branch of service with your application for review.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH.
    Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED

    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
    • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
    Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
