Description: Job Description Summary: The
Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for performing specialized technical work investigating adherence to environmental health laws and regulations by the performance of inspections in one or more specialized areas of environmental health. Employee is responsible for performing inspections according to established schedules or in response to complaints or outbreaks of illness, determining adherence to codes and regulations, preparing reports of inspection findings and recommendations and initiating enforcement actions as necessary. Work also involves answering inquiries about environmental health issues from the general public and assisting other team members. Duties assigned vary according to area of specialization, needs of the Department, and allocation of the workload.
Salary: Target Hiring Pay: $ 30.87-$35.19 - USD Per Hour Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.
Schedule: This position operates on a choice of our four-day work week (typically Monday-Thursday) or a five-day work week. This position may be hybrid, with remote work and in-office work as needed and approved by the Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: - Performs compliance inspections of regulated facilities such as, retail food service establishments, childcare centers, group homes, schools , swimming pools, body art establishments, onsite wastewater treatment systems. Documents all violations, determines compliance with applicable local and state laws and regulations. Reviews construction plans for compliance with applicable public health related codes and regulations.
- Receives and reviews permit and plan review applications, issues permits and approvals . Prepares and maintains inspection reports and other appropriate documents , including but not limited to memoranda, letters, notices of violation and civil penalty notices. Initiates enforcement actions, as necessary, to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Prepares and submits written comments to other agencies regarding the environmental health aspects of proposed activities such as development and construction projects.
- Investigates complaints regarding environmental health concerns. Conducts disease surveillance and investigations, collects biological and zoonotic samples using best practice methods.
- Provide and explain educational materials, regulations, policies, and other compliance information to contractors, permit holders, consultants and the general public . Responds to consumer complaints, requests for information regarding regulations, procedures, and systems. Participates in professional conferences, and committees to continue learning. Instructs classes in the proper handling, storage and preparation of food for the benefit of food service establishment personnel. Responds to environmental health emergencies such as regulated facility fires, and public health emergencies as needed or required .

Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Health or related field AND
- A minimum of one year of experience in Environmental Health, Restaurant/Retail Food Management, Teaching, Training, or other similar work experience
- OR any combination of related education and experience
- Immunization policy compliance with Public Health (details provided upon interview)
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations as they pertain to environmental health or ability to learn quickly.
- Strong written and oral communication
- Independent critical thinking and analysis
- Team oriented, self-motivated, and reliable
- Ability to articulate clearly and effectively to varying levels of customer
- Ability to understand license types and rules
- Strong time management and prioritization skills
- Bilingual in speaking and writing Spanish
- Candidate must successfully pass retail food standardization and required training(s) within one year of hire
