NOTES :
Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer. Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.
An Astronomical Observer operates, coordinates, and maintains all Observatory astronomical instruments (telescopes, coelostat, and related apparatus) and all astronomical photographic and video equipment, helps communicate information on astronomical observations and techniques to the public, supervises part-time telescope demonstrators, and does related work.
REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in astronomy, physics, optical engineering, or a closely-related field and 2,000 hours of paid or volunteer experience in the design, maintenance, or operation of astronomical telescopes or optical instruments.
4,000 hours of additional paid or volunteer experience in the design, maintenance, or operation of astronomical telescopes or optical instruments may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years of the required education.

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of the candidate’s professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Analytical Ability; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: principles of responsible telescope use, such as proper positioning, filtering, eyepiece characteristics, and lubrication; procedures of telescope operation, such as mirror alignment, lens care, instrument selection, and dome rotation; Conscientiousness; Supervision; Responsiveness and Follow-up; Shares Knowledge and Information; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: principles of astronomical observing, such as telescope and naked eye observation of the motion, position, brightness, and features of objects in the sky; principles and characteristics of astronomical optical instruments, such as telescopes, binoculars, and astronomical cameras; procedures of telescope operation, such as positioning, lens selection, basic maintenance, and dome rotation; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Candidates will be notified by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interviews, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that the interviews will begin during the period of DECEMBER 2, 2024 to DECEMBER 13, 2024.
