The Wildlife Division Director performs highly advanced (senior-level) managerial work and is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of the Wildlife Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, this senior executive leader oversees policy, planning and implementation of wildlife management activities to meet legislative, regulatory and conservation initiatives for game, non-game, and threatened and endangered species. The Director leads a team of approximately 320 professionals in the development of research, management and regulatory programs designed to strengthen the management and conservation of the wildlife and natural resources of Texas. Supports innovative programs aimed at educating the public about the use and enjoyment of the state's diverse wildlife and habitats. Provides broad oversight of budgeting and planning. Leads staff in collaborating with private landowners, hunters, wildlife enthusiasts, conservation organizations and other private, state, and federal partners. Requires extensive experience in wildlife management, supervision and leadership of large, disciplinary diverse and geographically dispersed teams. Represents the Division at Commission and legislative hearings on wildlife and habitat management issues. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, wildlife ecology or closely related field in natural resource conservation.
Experience: Eight years of progressively responsible broad-based experience administering wildlife management programs and leading large, disciplinary diverse and geographically dispersed teams.
Experience in strategic planning and program or policy development.
Experience in team building, project management and public speaking.
NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.
Licensure: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license
NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in a relevant field may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD in a relevant field may substitute for two years of the required experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's of Science degree in wildlife science, wildlife ecology, wildlife management, or closely related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of sound biological practice with respect to management of wildlife resources including game, non-game, threatened and endangered species and the full range of relevant habitat and wildlife health issues on both public and private lands;

Ability to develop innovative programs to help achieve departmental goals of budgetary self-sufficiency and increased participation by all segments of the population in activities related to natural resource conservation;
Ability to conduct presentations to the TPWD Commission, Legislative committees, Advisory Committees and public interest groups;
Ability to negotiate among competing interests;
Ability to motivate and mentor professional staff;
Ability to lead large, disciplinary diverse and geographically dispersed teams;
Ability to organize workloads, establish priorities and allocate available financial resources and staff;

WORKING CONDITIONS Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with extended work hours frequently necessary.
Required to travel in-state or out-of-state with possible overnight stays.
