    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Planning, Geography, Social Science, Landscape Architecture, or a planning related field, plus three (3) years of experience in planning related work.
    • Twelve (12) semester hours of relevant graduate college course work may substitute for six (6) months of required experience with a maximum substitution of two (2) years.
    • Experience in planning related work may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

    The City of Austin’s Transportation and Public Works Department has an exciting opportunity for a qualified planning professional to join our department. The Planning Section of the Transportation Systems Development Division seeks to hire a Planner III - GIS Analyst to assist local and regional transportation planning activities. This position will be responsible for a wide range of transportation planning functions in the areas of transportation planning, policy, programming and capital project development. Duties include:

    • Perform professional level planning work in the development of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization ( CAMPO ) Regional Transportation Plan and other CAMPO -related initiatives on behalf of the City of Austin, such as researching and identifying future amendments to the CAMPO Plan and its associated Transportation Improvement Program ( TIP ), assisting with applications in response to CAMPO Call for Projects for federal and state funding on behalf the Department, supporting City of Austin CAMPO Technical Advisory Committee ( TAC ) members through coordination of work requested by the TAC , and assist with the development of recommendations for the City Council members serving on the Transportation Policy Board.
    • Assists in coordination with TxDOT, Capital Metro and other regional agencies on transportation planning activities, such as Project Connect and I-35 Capital Express.
    • Assist with the development and implementation of the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan ( ASMP ), including developing short and long-range plans and providing technical advice and assistance in public engagement activities.
    • Coordinates meetings and presentations to City boards and commissions and community groups. Responds to public inquiries and answers citizen questions about the planning processes.
    • Provides technical support and assistance with GIS mapping tasks and analysis including maintaining online web maps and data.
    • May assist with other Transportation and Public Works Department programs and projects as needed.

    • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, geography, architecture, or transportation engineering
    • Experience developing and/or implementing local and regional transportation plans and/or policies.
    • Proficient with Geographic Information Systems software, Microsoft Office suite, and Adobe Creative Suite.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with changing priorities.
    • Ability to work in a collaborative manner with Division team members and across department Divisions, and a diverse group of stakeholders from multiple city departments and outside agencies.
    • Excellent written and presentation skills.
    • Familiarity with the National Association of City Transportation Officials ( NACTO ) Design Guides and other transportation regulatory requirements and guidelines (i.e., local code, national Manual on Uniform Transportation Devices, ITE Trip Generation tables, etc.)
    • Do you have one of the following: current American Institute of Certified Planners certification ( AICP ), Professional Transportation Planner ( PTP ), Congress of New Urbanism accreditation ( CNU -A), Geographic Information Systems Professional ( GISP ), or similar accreditation or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.


    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Researches information as requested and/or needed. Analyzes data to discover patterns and/or discrepancies. Writes information reports. Writes/drafts legal documents, i.e. contracts, regulations, ordinance amendments, resolutions, etc. Answers citizen questions and provide assistance. Speaks as City representative before boards, commissions, public groups, etc. Reviews plats and site plans for compliance with policy codes, ordinances, standards, etc. Reviews traffic impact analyses. Provides technical advice and assistance to citizens, contractors, departments, management, etc. Coordinates meetings between consultants, public, etc. and city staff. Coordinates division/section activities with other divisions/sections. Interprets/explains/enforces city policies and procedures, building/land development codes specifications, ordinances, etc. Conducts field checks to verify correctness of data. Reviews and evaluates various reports and studies. Maintain project files and records. Develops short/long range plans. Seeks/evaluates/recommends purchase of city property. Monitor contract expenditures. Plans and develops survey instruments, i.e. questionnaires, rating scales, etc., and methodology for use. Utilizes and modifies computer models and statistical packages for planning application.

    City Government
