    Minimum Qualifications

    Non-competitive: seven years of experience in public relations, social media, and digital communications. Associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in Communications, English, Public Relations, Social Media, Digital Communications, or similar degree, substitutes for two, four, or five years.

    Promotion: one year of experience as a Public Information Specialist 1 (Digital Content).

    Duties Description

    The Public Information Specialist 2 (Digital Content) will be responsible for developing strategies and programs that engage the community and grow public support of the New York State Park system. They will also assist with the public-facing elements of multi-agency projects from the Governor’s office. Duties include but are not limited to:
    • Collaborating with various Bureaus to develop recommendations for website functionality and how information is displayed and disseminated to the public.
    • Serving as the agency Language Access Coordinator-- managing agency-wide language translation requests, securing on-site and virtual translators, including American Sign Language (ASL), and maintaining the agency’s language access plan.
    • Serving as the agency Open Data Coordinator - identifying, assessing, posting, and updating the agency’s public documents on the statewide Open Data website.
    • Serving as an agency representative on statewide multi-agency planning initiatives.
    • Assisting press operations, including writing press releases, interacting with the media, and managing public meeting notification.
    • Assisting with the development and preparation of public presentations and Commissioner correspondence on agency policy and program matters for internal and external audiences.
    • Planning public events and Commissioner’s appearances, including coordinating event logistics, writing remarks, and distributing media advisories.
    • Identifying, developing, and executing special initiatives, events and celebrations, such as Pride Week, Connect Kids, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Learn-to-Swim, I Love My Park Day, the 250th Anniversary of American Revolution, major golf tournaments, and the New York State Fair.
    • Coordinating with the agency’s marketing team to develop digital content for social media, visual and informational exhibits, publications, and website features.
    • Conducting research and preparing information related to the agency’s digital content for a diverse audience of internal and external audiences.
    • Developing and implement strategies for reaching new and underserved audiences.
    • Responding to and troubleshoot the general public’s inquiries.
    • Assisting in training/orienting new Public Affairs Bureau staff members.
    • Supervising lower-level staff.

    Operating Needs:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
