    Definition

    Selection Components:

    Application Evaluation- Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis. Qualified applicants will be invited to a virtual interview. Virtual Interview - Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future Senior Recreation Leader vacancies as they occur in any of the assigned areas throughout the Recreation & Senior Services Department.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience : One year of work or volunteer experience in recreation, childcare, facilities set-up and operations, or related field.

    When assigned to Marine Education and Conservation : O ne year of experience working with the public in an interpretive or educational capacity. Volunteer or work experience with marine conservation, outdoor life, natural history, environmental stewardship, and facilitating large groups is desirable.

    Education : Completion of formal or informal education at a level that provides the ability to read and write at a level required by the job.

    When Assigned to Marine Education and Conservation : Some college-level coursework in natural sciences, marine biology, zoology, or related subjects is highly desirable.

    License/Certificate : Possession of a valid California driver’s license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carryout job-related essential functions.

    R ed Cross CPR and First Aid certificates within six (6) months of hire.

    The City of Newport Beach is located in the coastal center of Orange County, with Los Angeles County to the north and San Diego County to the south. It has an estimated permanent population of 86,738 but during the summer months, the population grows to more than 100,000 with 20,000 to 100,000 tourists daily.

    The City of Newport Beach was incorporated September 1, 1906 and the current City Charter was adopted in 1954. The City operates under a Council-Manager form of government. Its seven City Council Members are elected by district, but are voted on by the population as a whole. They serve four-year terms. The Council consists of the Mayor and six other members and is responsible for policy-making, passing local ordinances, adopting the budget, appointing committees and hiring the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
