Fleet Management Department is seeking skilled and motivated
Fleet Technicians I to perform repairs and maintenance work on automobiles, trucks, and equipment; operate gas and electric welding equipment to fabricate, modify, and repair a wide variety of metal articles. Duties may also include assisting with diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and operational defects in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, as well as alternative fuel systems.
Additional responsibilities may consist of:
- Assisting in the diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational issues in gasoline and diesel-powered trucks and heavy construction equipment.
- Operating welding equipment to fabricate and repair components such as hydraulic systems, fuel tanks, and truck scaffolding.
- Performing maintenance and repair tasks both in the shop and in the field.
- Mechanical and preventative maintenance at San Bernardino County fueling sites.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Fleet Management Department provides vehicles, equipment, and services to the officials and employees of the County so that they may, in turn, provide services that promote health, safety, well being, and quality of life to the residents of San Bernardino County.
Fleet Management provides services for the majority of county vehicles and equipment. Services include the acquisition, maintenance, repair, modification, and disposal of vehicles and other related equipment. The department also operates its main garage in San Bernardino, along with the following shops: light duty (cars and pickup trucks), heavy duty (large trucks and other equipment), welding/metal fabrication, parts room, fueling stations, and several "service centers."
Additionally, the department operates a motor pool, which has ownership and/or maintenance responsibility for approximately 1,900 automobiles, vans, pick-up trucks, and various specialty vehicles assigned to county departments. The Motor Pool oversees replacement, fuel, maintenance, repair and other operational funding of fleet vehicles.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre-Employment Process: Incumbents must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.
Physical: Incumbents must be physically able to lift 50 pounds, stand, bend, squat, kneel, twist, turn, and stoop. Employees work outside continuously and are exposed to electricity, chemicals, heat, oil, odors, dust, gas, and noise.
Tools: Incumbents must have their own hand tools. An annual tool allowance of $550 is provided on July 1st.
Shift: Incumbents may be required to work day, evening, or night shifts, to meet departmental needs.
License: Must possess a valid California Class C driver license at time of hire. Based on assignment, incumbents must obtain and maintain a valid California Class B driver license. Indicate CA license number, class, and expiration date on Application and Supplemental Questionnaire.

Minimum RequirementsEXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of hands-on apprenticeship experience as a journey-level automotive and/or diesel technician, repairing and maintain automobiles and trucks.
