DESCRIPTION THE COUNTY
Alameda County, located on the east side of San Francisco Bay, is California's seventh-largest county. The County employs 9,080 full-time employees and operates on an annual budget of $2.39 billion. Oakland, the County seat, is California's eighth largest city. One and a half million people call Alameda County home and live in a variety of incorporated cities, unincorporated communities and rural areas. THE POSITION: Under general supervision, to transport infants and minor children, juvenile detainees, and county wards by passenger car, van, bus, or other public transportation; to be responsible for their safety and care; and to perform related duties as required.
Incumbents in this classification are employed on a services-as-needed hourly basis. Positions in this classification are found in the Probation Department and Social Services Agency. Most trips are within the Bay Area Counties; however, some assignments may be throughout the State of California. Transportation Workers are not assigned any counseling functions.

THE VACANCY: This recruitment is to fill positions in the Probation Department and the Social Services Agency. Transportation Workers work under general supervision, to transport minors and county wards by passenger car, van, bus, or other public transportation. Most trips are within the Bay Area counties; however, some assignments may be throughout the State of California. Transportation Workers are not assigned counseling functions. EXAMPLES OF DUTIESNOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Transports court wards/dependents/detainees, including infants, from juvenile hall, foster homes, and institutions to doctors' and dentists' offices and to hospitals and clinics; schedules reappointments and arranges for admission to clinics.
2. Transports dependent infants and minor children in emergency foster care between foster homes, group homes and foster family facilities. May also transport minors to and from emergency foster care and foster home and group home placements.
3. Transports court wards and other children from foster homes or Juvenile Hall to hearings in various municipal or other courts, court related and program activities; supervises them en route and while waiting time for their court appearance; returns them to their residences.
4. Transports wards between Juvenile Hall, various institutions, foster homes, school and their own homes; transports them to State mental hospitals, to State juvenile Institutions and to juvenile halls in other counties.
5. Serves citations and subpoenas; delivers mail and clothing; plans and organizes driving schedules.
6. May ensure that routine maintenance is performed on vehicles and that vehicles are cleaned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSExperience:
The equivalent of one year of full-time work experience involving the operation of a motor vehicle, or performing work which requires use of a vehicle on the job.
Special Requirements:
Some positions require possession of a certificate of completion in First Aid or Basic Life Support, AND possession of a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
A good driving record according to the Department of Motor Vehicles negligent operator guidelines, and qualification for automobile insurance.
Candidates appointed to positions in this classification in the Probation Department must pass a thorough background investigation. Any felony conviction is disqualifying.
License:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Some positions require that the applicant possess a valid Class B California Driver's License.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSThe most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies: Knowledge of:

• First aid and basic life saving techniques.

• Operate a passenger automobile, van or bus in a safe and proper manner.
• Provide articulate information regarding the passenger's behavior and ability to relate during the drive.
• Supervise children while driving.
• Schedule trips and appointments efficiently.
• Exercise prudence and caution in the transportation of juveniles.
• Maintain security and safety routines.
• Effectively deal with disturbed youngsters and adolescents.
• Communicate tactfully and effectively with juveniles.
• Function effectively under stress and evaluate situations for potential danger.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Care for infants.
• Become familiar with the general characteristics and behavior patterns of mentally disordered persons.
EXAMINATION COMPONENTS THE EXAMINATION: The examination will consist of the following three (3) steps:
Review for Minimum Qualifications: If you do meet the minimum qualifications, you will be notified via email. You must fill out the application and supplemental questionnaire completely. Not filling out any part of either the application or the supplemental questionnaire will disqualify you from the examination. Resumes submitted in place of complete applications will not be accepted.
Virtual Written Examination: Once it has been established that you meet the minimum qualifications, you will be invited via email to participate in a multiple-choice examination.
Virtual Oral Panel Interview (Weighted as 100% of the final examination score)
: If the candidate is successful in the written portion of the examination, the candidate will then be invited to participate in an oral interview where they will be asked about past job experiences relating to the core competencies that successful incumbents of the job possess. The candidates who pass this portion of the exam will then be scored and put into rank order. The oral panel interview may also serve as the hiring interview at the discretion of the hiring authority.
