    The City of Murrieta is accepting applications for the position of Fire Engineer to fill two (2) current vacancies for our Fire Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to two (2) years.

    DEFINITION
    Under general supervision drives, operates, and maintains firefighting equipment and apparatus; responds to fire and other emergency calls; participates in the control and suppression of fires; rescues individuals from burning structures and other hazardous situations; provides medical assistance; participates in activities related to hazardous materials incidents; provides other services; and performs related duties as required.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Drives safety equipment and personnel to and from fires and other types of emergencies and non-emergencies, including both code-3, non-code, drills, training exercises, and other departmental functions in a manner that ensures the safety of personnel, the public, and equipment
    • Drives to and positions firefighting apparatus and other units at emergency sites; operates aerial apparatus and equipment; locates hydrants, attaches hoses, and operates pumps at proper pressures; evaluates adequacy of water system and available water supply; maintains radio contact with dispatch and other units
    • Participates in fire extinguishment, ventilation, salvage, rescue, and other operations; operates various firefighting, control, and rescue equipment such as pumps, ladders, air chisel, and extrication tools; lays hose lines and directs water streams into fires; provides emergency medical services to individuals in need of such care
    • Inspects fire apparatus and equipment to ensure presence of appropriate equipment and operational efficiency; cleans and performs minor maintenance; main­tains records on vehicles and equipment; performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment as necessary; assists in maintaining clean and orderly conditions in and about the fire station; assists in performing varied mechanical, plumbing, carpentry and other repair work to maintain the fire station and related tools, equipment and apparatus
    • Trains firefighters in the proper use, care, and operation of equipment; participates in training and development activities to maintain current knowledge of technological advancements and other relevant information.
    • As assigned, serves as acting Captain and performs the duties of a Firefighter


    Minimum Qualifications

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
    Required:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED), supplemented by college level coursework (30+ semester units) in fire science or a related field
    • Two (2) years of experience as a Firefighter in a municipal fire department
    Preferred:
    • Equivalent to an associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in fire science or a related field
    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class B Driver's License or a Firefighter-restricted Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
    • Possession of an Emergency Medical Technician I Certification or Emergency Medical Technician P Certification
    • Possession of a valid healthcare provider CPR Certification or REMSA equivalent
    • Completion of the State Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1A and 1B course and/or possess the State Certification as a Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1
    • Successful completion of the Pump Certification Task Book
    • Possession of the Murrieta Fire & Rescue driver certifications for the following apparatus types: Type 1, Type 3, and Truck. Obtain driver Certifications for all remaining apparatus whithin six months from the date of appointment
    • Successful completion of the State Fire Command 1A and two (2) additional Company Officer courses; or, completion of the State Fire Officer (FO) 2A, 2D, and one (1) additional FO class for a total of three (3)

    • Meet the physical requirements established by the City;
    • Perform a variety of maintenance duties such as painting, plumbing, mechanical and other repair work.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    • Fire Engineers are assigned to a 48/96 work schedule
    • This is a promotional opportunity. Candidates must currently be employed, in good standing as a paid, full-time safety member of the Murrieta Fire & Rescue Department
    • Candidates must have successfully completed the 18 month employee probationary period at the time of application closing date
    • Candidates are responsible for scheduling coverage needed for non-mandatory and mandatory components. Shift coverage needed for mandatory components will be done utilizing department time per the MOU

    SELECTION PROCEDURE
    Applicants possessing the required qualifications will be invited to participate in an assessment center process. All qualified applicants will be assessed on job-relevant qualifications including possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the Fire Engineer position; ability to perform the essential job functions; and related education, training and experience. The practical exam process may include, but is not limited to, components such as a written test, oral board examination, pumping evolutions, truck operations, driving, and pre-trip inspections.

    • HOLIDAYS : 156hours per year for 56-hour personnel and 117hours per year for 40-hour personnel.

    40-hour personnel
    • First three years of service - 3.96 hours per pay period

VISION INSURANCE : The City pays 100% of the premium for the employee and their eligible dependents. LIFE INSURANCE : The City pays for 100% of the premium for a life insurance policy equal to one time an employee's base salary. Additional life insurance is available. LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE : The City pays 100% of the premium for the employee. FIRE RETIREE MEDICAL TRUST : Annual City Contribution $2,400 per year. BILINGUAL PAY INCENTIVE : 2.5% of base pay for eligible members of the association who are fluent in the Spanish language. EDUCATIONAL PAY INCENTIVE : Employees are eligible for Educational Pay Incentive in one of the categories below only upon satisfactory completion of two continuous years of satisfactory performance.
    • 40 Semester units of credit and any of the following certificates: Fire Officer, Company Officer Certificate, or Chief Officer$150 per month
    • Associate's degree in Fire Science or Technology or a related field.$1.25 per hour

    PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATION INCENTIVE : $5,000 per year (paid biweekly) for Captains and Engineers who maintain a current paramedic license. UNIFORM ALLOWANCE : $1,850 per year (paid biweekly) TECHNICAL RESCUE/TRUCK INCENTIVE PAY : Employees who maintain technical rescue/truck certification receive a $300 per month stipend. TUITION REIMBURSEMENT : Eligible employees are able to be reimbursed $3,450 per fiscal year for traditional courses or $6,900 per fiscal year for an accelerated academic program (maximum reimbursement of $13,800) LONGEVITY PAY: 2% after 15 full years of service with the City and an additional 3% after 20 full years of servicewith the City COMPENSATORY TIME : Maximum of 120 hours
