    Job Description:

    Overview

    To inspect, maintain, repair and overhaul pumps, machinery, electrical equipment, piping, meters and related mechanical equipment used in the City's facilities and systems. To operate one or more types of heavy maintenance equipment and automotive equipment in the operations and maintenance of Public Works infrastructure.

    Essential Functions
    • Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment in the City's water and wastewater collection, distribution, treatment and related facilities and systems, including, but not limited to, pumps, compressors, valves, motors, engines, controllers, conveyor systems, mechanical drives and related or similar systems and equipment.
    • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and procedures on various mechanical and electrical components of the water and wastewater systems in addition to the maintenance of other equipment.
    • Installs and maintains chemical feed systems, including chlorine, caustic soda, alum, methanol, deodorant, methane gas, polymer and/or aquashade systems.
    • Inspects, records and utilizes charts, dial, gauges, meters and other monitors to determine pressure conditions, flow and feed rates and other operating conditions. Performs routine adjustments in response to monitoring results.
    • Performs a variety of service activities relating to the water and wastewater distribution and collection systems, such as digging trenches for mains, excavating for services and hydrants, locating valves and blowouts in water mains and making repairs.
    • Performs routine electric and/or acetylene welding, brazing and/or soldering repairs and fabrications as required.
    • Checks, adjusts and maintains equipment service records.
    • Prepares routine reports and maintains daily records and logs.
    • Reads and interprets blueprints as required to repair, maintain or build equipment.
    • Maintains inventory of equipment, spare parts and other required materials, initiates orders or recommendations for required parts and equipment or additional stock.
    • May standby for and answer emergency calls to repair equipment on an "on call, 24 hour per day" basis.
    • The intent of this class description is to provide a representative summary of the types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of classifications given this title and shall not be construed as a declaration of the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position. Incumbent may be required to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this job description.


    Minimum Qualifications
    • High school diploma or GED.
    • One year experience in disciplines relating to public works operation and maintenance , or water utility operations and maintenance , or natural gas utility operations and maintenance, or general commercial or residential construction, or land clearing, or pipeline construction, or landscaping and irrigation, or plumbing, or metal fabrication or machining, or manufacturing, or farming or ranching, or building maintenance, or machine/equipment operation or maintenance, or warehouse/dock work, or other similar activities.
    • Obtain a Level III Water Distribution License within 18 months of employment in position.
    • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.


    Job Based Competencies
    • Ability to tolerate, ascend and descend equipment with "high-rise" operators stations.
    • Skill in the use and maintenance of tools used in the maintenance and repair of treatment facility machinery and related equipment.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, sketches, drawings, maps and blueprints.
    • Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance, servicing and repair of pumps, motors, gear drives and related water and wastewater treatment facilities machinery and equipment.
    • Ability to locate, diagnose and evaluate causes of equipment failure.
    • Ability to work overtime and/or be on call.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Public Works staff, staff of other City Departments and Offices and the general public.


    Responsibility

    Under the direction of and responsible to the Department Head or designated representative. Generally no supervision is exercised; may occasionally direct the work of others on specific projects.

    Physical Requirements

    This position requires the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Work requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, and crouching. Incumbent is subject to inside and outside activities with a variety of weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Visual acuity is required to operate automotive equipment and perform maintenance tasks. Worker is required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in performance of duties.

    Public Contact

    Good interpersonal skills are an important component of this position. Although public contact is limited, when such contacts occur, incumbent is expected to respond courteously and responsively to questions relating to the purpose and scope of repairs and similar questions. Other public contacts may be required from time to time to explain aspects of the operation and functioning of the City's Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities mechanical equipment and systems.
