    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in related field, plus four (4) years of experience in the assigned area of specialization.
    • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Valid Texas Driver License.
    • Licensing for specific disciplines may be required.
    • Appropriate certifications as specified for the assignment.
    Notes to Applicants
    This position supports department-wide health and safety services and programs independently and under limited direction, as well as present/conduct safety meetings, independently develop and deliver training courses, and conduct audits department-wide. The focus of this position is on programs addressing leading indicators and early detection and prevention of employee injuries, but may support other programs and projects as needed.

    Driving Requirement:
    This position requires a Valid Texas Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date.
    External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    Critical:

    This position has been designated as a Critical Employee position. Critical Employees are considered necessary and vital and supports activities that impact City or department operations. This work can be done while at a designated work site or while working at an alternate work location. Critical employees who are able to work at an alternative work location are required to do so. Schedules may be modified, and employees may be reassigned to another area during extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to provide essential services.

    $32.23 - $40.29

    Preferred Experience:
    • Experience in developing and implementing Occupational Health and Safety programs for a large organization.
    • Skill in public speaking and the ability to deliver specialized training to employees in office and industrial environments.
    • Certification in one or more core safety training programs (ie. Smith System driver, CPR / First aid), or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
    • Experience assessing the work environment to identify workplace hazards and devising / implementing controls to mitigate those hazards.
    • Experience using shared user platforms for work processes such as Cority, SiteDocs, Microsoft Office Suite, and TEAMs.
    • Experience designing and leading projects with cross-functional teams.
    • Professional certification(s) related to Occupational Health and Safety, or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Develops and implements comprehensive safety and training programs to ensure adherence to safety practices and procedures. Establishes standards and procedures, and performs facility and job site inspections to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, regulations, or departmental safety policies and procedures. Participates, as necessary, in the preparation and monitoring of budget and contracts/contractors, and in the implementation of the departmental budget; and recommends and justifies capital expenditures. Conducts accident and incident investigations to determine root causes, and develops plans to prevent recurrence by inspecting or reviewing areas, equipment, processes, and work activities for hazardous conditions. Provides advice and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of occupational safety issues and decisions. Develops and conducts occupational safety training for various workgroups, including evaluation and modification of programs to meet Local, State, and Federal OSHA requirements. Coordinates occupational safety activities which may include conducting safety drills, inspections, investigations, or other safety program events. Directs and reviews the analysis of accident or injury data by identifying trends, creating related reports, and including financial impact in an effort to develop proposed solutions to problems and identify the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs. Researches occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the work place.

    • Ability to develop and maintain current knowledge of occupational health and safety programs.
    • Ability to develop and facilitate training sessions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

    City Government

    The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government.
