Position: Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education
Effective Date: August 18, 2025 (Fall Semester)
Salary Range: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary is $74,652 to $158,688/per year. The anticipated hiring range is $80,000 to $95,000/per year. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

College of Education
The College of Education at CSULB is amongst the premier educator preparation institutions in the state, preparing teachers, counselors, administrators and community leaders to promote equity and excellence in diverse urban settings through effective pedagogy, evidence-based practices, collaboration, leadership, innovation, scholarship, and advocacy. Clinical practice is central to programs in the College of Education. With over 100 area clinical practice partnerships, students within the College of Education gain invaluable hands-on experience with faculty mentors and skilled practitioners who help provide real world experience in diverse, urban settings, augmenting classroom instruction.
Department of Teacher Education
The Department of Teacher Education (TED) is composed of faculty who teach in one or more of the following programs: the Multiple Subject Credential Program , Single Subject Credential Program [EC1] , Certificate Program in Reading and Literacy Added Authorization, Master of Early Childhood Education, Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Master of Education in Dual Language Development, and Master of Mathematic Education. The faculty and staff strive to prepare knowledgeable, caring, reflective, and highly competent teachers who are advocates for children, adolescents, and families. Our inquiry- and experience-based programs promote educational equity and excellence in contemporary, inclusive urban classrooms.
Required Qualifications: - Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or a related field with an emphasis on early childhood education, preschool education, preschool learning, child development, elementary education, elementary content area methods, or another appropriate degree in content area. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2025.
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse, multilingual, and neurodiverse urban preschool and/or elementary- level students, especially those similar to the surrounding CSULB communities
- Earned a school teaching credential in the United States, or California Teacher Permit, or higher permit (supervisor or director permits)
- Experience being the teacher of record in United States preschool, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, first, second, or third-grade classrooms.
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including Black/African American, Latine/x, Native American/Indigenous, low-income, first-generation, and minoritized students
- Demonstrate potential for classroom-based scholarship in the field
Preferred Qualifications: - Demonstrates experience of successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
- Potential for teaching effectiveness and excellence at the college level in teacher education, with an emphasis on teacher preparation courses or post-baccalaureate courses in preschool education, elementary education, and TK-3 methods
- Experience supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse higher education classroom
- At least three years of experience being the teacher of record in United States urban preschool, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, first, second, or third-grade classrooms in urban settings
- Experience with mentoring and/or coaching preservice teachers in PK-3 settings
- Demonstrated capacity and potential for leadership (i.e., supporting other teachers, professional development) and/or curriculum design
- Potential for effective use of a wide range of instructional technologies pertaining to teacher education, including online teaching
- Potential for working with accreditation agencies or community partners
- Experience working with bilingual communities
Duties: - Teach a range of courses in Early Childhood Education. Primary teaching responsibilities may include the following:

- EDEC 420 Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Early Childhood Education
- EDEC 422 Developing Family, School, and Community Partnerships
- EDEC 430 Advocating for Early Intervention with Young Children and their Families
- EDEC 450 Teaching Early Language and Literacy (Birth-K)
- EDEC 522 Developing Family, School, and Community Partnerships
- EDEC 520 Curriculum and Assessment in Early Childhood Education

- May supervise teacher candidates in preschool or elementary education programs
- Engage in partnerships, service, and collaboration in PK-12 schools, community colleges, and other educational and community organizations
- Contribute to college-wide and/or community-based efforts to close/ address equity and opportunity gaps
- Engage in research, scholarship, and creative activities, leading to publications, conference presentations, etc.
- Participate in service and faculty governance through program, department, college, and university meetings and committees
- Maintain a campus office work schedule aligned with department workload (which may include evening and Saturday class sessions) and varied office hours
