About the Position:
The Director of Executive Communications will be a key member of the President’s Leadership team to align internal and external communication efforts reflecting the vision and mission of the University. The director works with the Chancellor’s Office, the vice presidents’ communications teams, the Chief of Staff and Strategic Communications to ensure messaging is aligned with the CSU mission, president’s vision and CSUF brand. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. This position reports directly to the Chief of Staff and ensures the president is informed and prepared for all events. The director is responsible for leading communication strategy development while cultivating and maintaining effective relationships across the university and with community partners. The director will research, plan and write a wide range of communications including speeches, talking points, campus announcements, donor collateral, signature publications, position briefings, podcasts, video scripting , social content, marketing, promotional, policy-related communications, and thought leadership and opinion columns for regional and national media outlets. The position ensures the clear communication of the President’s goals and priorities, aligning them with the university’s mission, values, and strategic direction. This is achieved through multi-channel strategies, including speechwriting, talking points, scripts, presentations, event support, social media content, correspondence, reports, website management, and stakeholder messaging. The role requires a proactive, strategic thinker with high ethical standards, discretion, and confidentiality in working with internal and external stakeholders. The incumbent will collaborate with the Chief of Staff and the leadership issues management team, helping to develop and disseminate messaging for pending issues and crisis communication. The director also works discreetly on sensitive assignments with sound judgment, maintaining the trust and confidence of the University President, senior leadership and staff. Essential Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related, applicable field and a minimum of five years of related professional experience researching, writing, editing, and proofing diverse editorial content, sometimes within highly condensed timeframes. Demonstrated ability to adapt writing to reflect the character, voice, and expressions of another person (e.g., an organization's chief executive). Experience in, knowledge of, and ability to synthesize and express complex public-policy issues related to higher education in California and the nation. Demonstrated ability to understand differing stakeholder audiences and differing content environments, adjusting editorial content accordingly. In-depth knowledge of overall university communication objectives. Ability to work independently, exercising sound judgment. Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective. Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents. Demonstrated organizational skills. Proficiency in various software applications such as Word, Excel and Google Suite with a high degree of accuracy and speed. Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) and their impact on communications and content strategies. Ability to function independently and organize workload with close attention to detail, manage multiple tasks and timelines, and make appropriate decisions following campus policies and procedures. Demonstrated technology competence.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English, or related field. Minimum of five years of experience working on executive-level projects. Experience working within an academic setting. Experience with social media, digital, in-person and traditional environments to communicate with various audiences. Experience working with confidential and sensitive information. Experience with data visualization tools, web editing, and graphic design. Experience using digital and multichannel platforms including web, social media, and traditional formats to effectively communicate to a portfolio of diverse audiences. Experience working in a fast-paced environment. Experience in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
License/Certifications
A Valid California Driver’s License.
