Summary/Class Characteristics Part Time Recreation Specialist The City of Petaluma is currently recruiting for a Part Time Recreation Specialist to fill vacancies within the Parks and Recreation Department. This recruitment may also be used to fill future Part Time Recreation Specialist vacancies that may occur in the City within the next 12 months. This part time position does not offer any benefits and hours worked will vary but typically will not exceed 20 hours per week.

Class CharacteristicsUnder general supervision from the Recreation Services Supervisor and Recreation Coordinator, this position is responsible for organizing and coordinating a variety of recreation programs, activities, and special events for the Recreation Services Department. This position may perform duties in one or more of the following functional areas or locations: Aquatics, Facilities and Building, Sports, Special Events, Camps, Petaluma Fairgrounds and/or the Senior Center. This position may exercise technical/functional supervision of volunteers and other part-time program staff. A Part-Time Recreation Specialist A is distinguished from that of a Recreation Specialist B in that the latter requires greater independence and the full scope of responsibility are exercised.
Duties- Help to plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise a variety of recreation programs, activities, and special events.
- Set-up furniture and equipment for classes, special events, and programs.
- Schedule and organize activities and special programs.
- Design flyers, posters, information packets, activity guides, and other related documents.
- Perform general maintenance and basic custodial work.
- Help to coordinate social functions and excursions.
- Perform a variety of office activities related to program functions.
- Maintain accurate records and reports.
- Correctly answer inquiries from the public over the telephone and in person.
- Review and share updated information about programs.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QualificationsKnowledge of:
- Recreation programs and activities offered by the City.
- Recreation Department policies, procedures, department recreation philosophy.
- Basic CPR and First Aid.
- Recreation programs for all ages depending on program assigned.
- Safe work practices.
- Principles of supervision and training, modern office procedures.
- English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
- Basic principles of marketing and public relations.
- Standard office practices and procedures.
- Child and elder abuse reporting guidelines.
Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Completion of some college level coursework in recreation, public administration, physical education, special education, or a related field.
Experience:
Recreation Specialist A:One year of responsible work experience in recreational and events program activities.
Recreation Specialist B:Two years of responsible work experience in recreational and events program activities.
