ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES:
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. Through its integrated system of 25 health centers and four hospitals - and expanded network of community partner clinics - DHS annually provides direct care for over 600,000 unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual budget of over $6.9 billion. For additional information regarding DHS please visit www.dhs.lacounty.gov .

Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    MISSION:
To advance the health of our patients and our communities by providing extraordinary care.

    DEFINITION:
Cleans, sterilizes, sets up, monitors, adjusts, and tests dialysis machines and accessory equipment used in the treatment of patients with acute renal failure or end-stage renal disease.

    Essential Job Functions

Collects water and dialysis solution samples and sends them to the laboratory for analysis on a monthly basis and depending on the results the equipment is sanitized if standards are not met.

Monitors the operation of a central dialysate supply system by observing meters and gauges and makes adjustments to maintain the proper degree of conductivity and temperature of the dialysate solution being delivered to individual dialyzers.

Sets up dialyzers at patients' bedside by connecting pumps to electrical power sources, installing tubing between dialyzers and blood pumps, and connecting dialyzer tubing to a dialysate delivery system.

Cleans and sterilizes dialysis equipment after each use by performing such procedures as disassembling systems, discarding and replacing membranes or dialyzers, sterilizing by flushing with various chemical solutions and treated water, and priming with fresh saline or vinegar.

Maintains dialyzer system components and accessory devices such as blood pumps and hand manometers by testing, calibrating, adjusting, replacing parts and, in the case of inoperative units, tagging for outside repair.

Prepares sterilizing solutions by drawing off hydrochloric acid from bulk stock and adding these to base solutions in accordance with established formulas.
Monitors the functioning of dialysis equipment during treatments and takes action to assure its continuous effective operation such as repositioning blood, dialysate and power lines, lubricating moving parts, repairing air and blood leaks by tightening connections or replacing faulty tubing sections, and when necessary, replacing malfunctioning components with reserve units.
Receives and stores supplies and accessory parts including drums of dialysate concentrate used in the maintenance of dialysis equipment and transfers them to the working area as necessary.
Confers with renal unit nurses concerning the selection of dialyzers and the proper functioning of dialyzers before and during treatments.
