    Minimum Qualifications
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to Engineering, Business Administration, Natural Science, or Public Administration plus six (6) years of related experience in the environmental field, public or business administration, three (3) years of which were in a managerial capacity.
    • Master’s degree may substitute for experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.

    $201,000 - $211,000

    The candidate selected for this role will possess expertise to function in a role supporting the Director with day-to-day operations for the department and will be second in command for the department. The next Deputy Director of Watershed Protection will partner with leadership and stakeholders to develop and implement strategies that align with the department and City of Austin goals. The selected candidate will oversee leadership responsibilities in the Director’s absence. The ideal candidate will have the ability to manage technical teams and programs across the department, including Engineering, Operations & Maintenance, and Environmental Compliance. The new Deputy Director will provide guidance on public and private development within the City of Austin. Experience in the private and public sectors will be beneficial for this role.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    Directs, develops, and implements short-and long-range strategies, plans, programs, and personnel that provide technical, administrative, managerial support, fiscal management, program planning, and evaluation. Represents the Department Director in a variety of interdepartmental, intergovernmental, and community matters and may assume responsibility for the department’s operations in the absence of the Director. Represents the department’s interests and positions before State and Local governmental officials, boards, commissions, associations, and community organizations. Directs and manages special projects and strategic planning. Provides direction over major capital improvement projects that impact departmental operations. Coordinates with other City departments to provide technical expertise to members of the public on citywide and current developments as it relates to watershed protection. Develops, revises, and implements standard operating practices, policies, and procedures governing the division. Ensures division is in compliance with all governmental regulations, ordinances, directives, and City practices, policies, and procedures. Assists in the development, management, and monitoring of the departmental budget and ensures department operates within appropriated budget. Recommends and approves major purchases and expenditures. Responds to and resolves sensitive inquiries, complaints, and issues from both internal and external sources. Prepares and presents reports by compiling, reviewing, and analyzing data; provides written and/or oral reports. Investigates and resolves consumer and citizen inquiries and complaints. Presents to City Council; Boards and Commissions; and County, State, Federal officials, vendors, contractors, and the public.

    Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

    City Government
