    Introduction

The Scottsdale Fire Department is looking for someone to join their dynamic and dedicated fire and life safety team. The right person is someone who is passionate about making the community of Scottsdale a safer place; someone who is collaborative; dedicated to excellence in service; and enjoys challenges and a demanding, dynamic work environment. This person will perform professional level inspections of a wide variety of construction projects and existing occupancies to ensure compliance with city adopted codes, legal requirements and national standards. This person will also conduct fire origin and cause investigations as part of the Scottsdale Fire Investigation Task Force. This person will work alongside other fire inspectors, plans examiners, and multiple other city departments.

    Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $44.53/hour.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    • A High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent.
    • Three years of experience in International Code Council (ICC), preferably International Fire Code (IFC) code, application, or enforcement.
    Licensing, Credentials and Other Requirements
    • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
    • Certification from the ICC in the current city adopted version of the IFC is required within 12 months of hire date.
    • Completion of the National Fire Academy Fire Investigation Classes, or the Arizona Arson Investigation series I and II certification is required within 12 months of hire date.
    • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.


    Essential Functions

    Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
    • Conducts fire safety inspections of existing facilities and new construction for conformance with city fire and building codes and regulations and with national standards.
    • Documents violations of laws, ordinances and safety hazards and communicates with the customer for resolution of the violations.
    • Interprets and explains fire codes and regulations.
    • Conducts inspection and acceptance tests for efficiency of fire protection systems and equipment, automatic fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems and associated devices.
    • Investigates fire incidents for origin and cause, which can include activities such as evidence collection and preservation, detailed report writing and possible court testimony as needed.
    • Operates city vehicles to off-site locations.
    • Attends continuing education classes as required.


    Work Environment/Physical Demands

    • Climb ladders or steps while performing inspections.
    • Do considerable walking, climbing, bending, stooping, lifting (up to 50 pounds when checking fire extinguishers), looking overhead, and/or working in small/cramped areas. Use small hand tools (pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.) while performing inspection duties.
    • Use appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), including a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while performing tasks in environments that may be immediately dangerous to life.
    • Travel to/from meetings and various locations.
    • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
