POSITION SUMMARYThe Development Services Department's Urban Engineering Division seeks an Engineering Technician.This Engineering Technician position is new to the Department. They will examine plans and specifications to verify they meet local, state, and federal codes and regulations. They will oversee the City's permit process by evaluating applications and responding to customer questions. These are essential functions for this specific position:- Evaluate construction plans, specifications, and calculations for both residential and commercial building construction to ensure compliance with codes, regulations, and engineering standards.
- Assist engineers and project managers with segments of complex projects by reviewing limited aspects of such projects.
- Perform inspections of new construction and existing improvements to verify compliance with codes and regulations.
- Provide written directives for issuing permits for residential and commercial construction.
- Answer questions from the public, builders, developers, architects, and engineers about codes ordinances and engineering standards.
- Prepare and maintain written reports, records of plan reviews, inspections, and actions taken. Respond to inquiries from the public concerning drainage, utilities, and other engineering-related matters.
- Collaborate with other building staff to evaluate plans for design compliance.
These are additional essential functions for this position throughout the City: - Prepares preliminary and final construction drawings utilizing CADD equipment, topographical profiles, and specification sheets used in the planning and construction of engineering projects
- Performs calculations in the review of design projects in multiple engineering disciplines
- Visits project sites prior to and during the design and construction process; reviews site plans and specifications for conformance; reviews work in progress to ensure compliance with contract documents and satisfactory completion of projects
- Assists engineers and project managers with segments of complex projects by designing limited aspects of such projects, performing research, etc.
- Develops presentation style drawings of engineering projects through use of computer graphics software, including slides, maps, charts, and graphs
- Performs computer aided drafting; creates and interprets GIS maps
- Researches utility locations for engineering projects Responds to inquiries from the public concerning drainage, utilities, and other engineering-related matters
- Possesses basic knowledge of plats
- Performs related work as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENTHigh School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, six (6) months or more of additional related training, andOne (1) to three (3) years of related experience. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or training.Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Preferences: AutoCAD and ArcGIS software experience
