    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Workdays & Hours: Tuesday- Saturday 5:00 am -1:30 pm. Occasional Weekend/Holidays (Subject to change)

    PURPOSE OF DIVISION
    The purpose of Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance Small Construction Maintenance Services, business unit is to effectively deliver self-performed maintenance services at each of the three HAS airports.

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
    The purpose of the Plumber, Small Construction Maintenance Services, is to self-perform plumbing maintenance work on buildings, utilities, and other infrastructure assets, within the three HAS airports. This position will repair pipes, fixtures, and other components of sanitary, storm water, environmental, natural gas, and domestic water system assets. The position will unclog drains and clear small, medium, and large plumbing stoppages. The position will install and repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, and hot water tanks. The position will install new plumbing components and sub-components.

    "Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required."

    The Plumber responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Performs plumbing maintenance work in city-managed buildings; repairs pipes, fixtures and opens clogged drains.
    • Install and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, water heaters and hot water tanks. Assembles and installs new plumbing.
    • Assembles, installs and repairs pipes, valves, fittings and fixtures of heating/cooling, water, gas and/or drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
    • Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe-threading machine. Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or manually.
    • Connects pipes using screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent and caulk joints. Checks for leaks by filling pipe system with water or air and reading pressure gauges.
    • Locates and marks position of pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors. Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
    • Performs somewhat complex plumbing repairs and preventive maintenance by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains. Welds holding fixtures to steel structural members.
    • Conducts preventive maintenance check-ups.
    • Cleans out sewer lines and operates electric sewer rodding equipment.
    • Repairs natural gas and gasoline piping systems.
    • Interprets building plans and blueprint.
    WORKING CONDITIONS
    The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. Requires the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fairly fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within moderate tolerance demands. The position may require working on weekends and the ability to work varied shifts such as first, second or third shifts to accommodate the airport travel environment and the needs of the Houston Airport System.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    Requires a High School diploma or GED and a current Texas Journey Level Plumber's license.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    One year of experience in plumbing construction and repair is required.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
    A current Texas Journey Level Plumber's license.
    Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. May require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

    PREFERENCES

    PREFERENCES
    • Preference will be given to applicants with experience working as a Plumber utilizing hand/power tools, and repairs in areas in a commercial, industrial or facilities operation setting.
    • Performing preventative maintenance, utilizing a maintenance management system, customer service skills, team-oriented workplace.
    **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

    This position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

    Pay Grade 16
