    About the Department

    The City of San José, the Capital of Silicon Valley, is one of the nation's best managed cities and one of the top ten cities in which to live, work, and do business.     The Public Works Department has the primary responsibility to deliver facilities and infrastructure that meets the needs of the residents of San José and comply with the standards and requirements established in the engineering guidelines and the City's Master Plans. The Department achieves its goals through planning, design and construction of the City's capital projects, and also through the plan review and permit process to regulate and facilitate private development projects.

    Position Duties

    The total salary range(s) for this classification is/are:

    Senior Facility Attendant: $31.07 - $37.79/hour

    T his amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determine d by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

    The Public Works Department is seeking to fill a vacant Senior Facility Attendant position. This position is responsible for leading and performing work of routine difficulty in a variety of custodial duties, minor maintenance work, and set-ups in preparation for events, meetings and other functions located at City Hall and other City Facilities such as Community Centers, Parks and Libraries. This position will report directly to the Supervisor of Trades.

    Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Leads and performs custodial work such as sweeping, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing floors, power washing outside grounds, as well as vacuuming, dusting, washing windows , and human biohazard emergency clean-ups.


    • Leads and performs graffiti removal.


    • Leads Facility attendants team and oversees contractual custodians


    • Leads and performs Facility attendant team to assist in custodial contract management for all PW City facilities.


    • Leads and performs inspection and investigation for custodial work and issues.


    • Leads and performs the setting up of equipment and platforms for events.


    • Leads and performs the arrangement of chairs, tables, and other furniture for banquets, conventions, dances, dinners, and other events according to charts, plans, and oral instructions.


    • Reads, interprets, and carries out written instructions to set up and arrange furniture and equipment for events.


    • Monitors on going events and provides any needed set-up or maintenance support.


    • Leads and assists in setting up lighting systems.


    • Leads and assists in setting up electrical outlet systems.


    • Leads and assists in setting up booths and exhibits.


    • Leads and assists in setting up press confere nce at City facilities and offsite locations.


    • Leads and performs minor maintenance checks on vehicles such as forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and pickup trucks.


    • Leads and performs minor repairs on equipment, furniture, plumbing fixtures, and other objects as needed.


    • Leads and performs light bulb replacements.


    • Assigns specific tasks to individuals and crews of Facility Attendants.


    • Completes requisition and work order forms.


    • Orders supplies and materials for Facility Attendants and contractual custodians.


    • Consults with Events Coordinator and Promoters on set-up requirements.


    • May be required to perform shift work.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Successful completion of high school, G.E.D. Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

    Experience: Two (2) years of experience in a variety of custodial, set-up, and minor maintenance work in preparing for events at a large cultural, convention, or public assembly facility .

    Desirable License or Certificates:

    Public Works maintains all Citywide Facilities, including Police Buildings. The San Jose Police Department requires all civilians working at their facilities to pass a background check and obtain a Civilian Police Badge. The Senior Facility Attendant candidate may be expected to apply for and successfully pass the Police Department background check in order to successfully pass their Probationary Period.

    Other Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

    Job Expertise - Experience in custodial, set-up, and minor maintenance work in preparing and monitoring of events and productions in a large convention, cultural, or public assembly facility; experience in operating motorized equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts; ability to read and interpret event and meeting schedules including diagrams and instructions for setting up tables, chairs, portable stages, portable sound systems and other equipment; ability to lift up to 80 pounds of heavy equipment and furniture and perform the essential physical functions of this position.

    Supervision - Sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness.

    Customer Service - Approaches problem-solving by focusing on customers first; advocates for customer results point of view; demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently in a timely , accurate , respectful and friendly manner.

    Computer Skills - Basic experience with common business computer applications including but not limited to word processing, email, CMMS, and internet.

    Flexibility - Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes , performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment, ability and willingness to work other shifts, including swing shift, weekends, and holidays.

    Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Communication Skills - Communicates and listens effectively and responds in an timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate , complete, current; well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form.

    Selection Process :
