    Definition

    The City of Milpitas ' Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and reliable leader to help implement and lead programs at the Milpitas Teen Center. Under the direction of the Youth and Teen Program Coordinator, this position helps plan and implement weekly activities, enrichment opportunities, workshops, and larger monthly events throughout the calendar year.

    The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of one year of experience working with youth and teens. They must be able to multitask effectively in a fast-paced work environment and work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues while adhering to City Rules and Regulations. The Special Project Associate may also have the opportunity to contribute to special events and other program areas within the Recreation and Community Services Department.

    The Teen Center hours of operation are typically

    Monday through Friday 4:00-7:00 p.m. and Saturday 3:00-6:00 p.m.

    Typical work schedule:
    Monday through Friday: 2:30-7:30pm
    Saturday: 2:30-6:30pm
    Schedule may change, depending on needs of the program.

    **This is a part-time, unbenefited, and unrepresented position working approximately 29 hours per week **

    Examples of Duties

    Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Work closely with the Program Coordinator to plan, implement, and evaluate new and creative teen programs, activities, workshops, and monthly events.
    • Supervise and engage with teen participants and at times parents of teen participants.
    • Provide general supervision of part-time staff at the Milpitas Teen Center, programs, activities, workshops, and events.
    • Help promote and market the Milpitas Teen Center.
    • Maintain close communication with teen-focused community-based organizations, vendors, and partners.
    • Facilitate teen life skills and team-building activities for teen participants.
    • Provide program feedback to the Program Coordinator.
    • Research and be knowledgeable of current teen trends.
    • Maintain a safe program environment and facility that is inclusive and accepting of all teens.
    • Respond to in-person, phone and email inquiries concerning Milpitas Teen Center programs and activities.
    • Process registration and Milpitas Teen Center memberships.
    • Maintain records and prepare reports.
    • Understand and implement Recreation and Community Services policies and procedures.
    • Open, close, and secure facilities in accordance with established procedures.
    • Attend mandatory monthly meetings and trainings.
    • Assist Program Coordinator with youth program administrative tasks as related to the Milpitas Teen Center.
    • Work City special events as assigned.
    • Other related duties as assigned.


    Typical Qualifications

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE
    • Possession of and ability to maintain Class C Driver’s License
    • First Aid / CPR / AED Certification (within 60 days of hire)*
    *Required First Aid / CPR / AED certification costs (excluding health exams) are covered within the Department’s operating budget. Costs associated with retesting due to the employee’s inability to pass certification testing, will be the responsibility of the employee.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • Graduation from high school or equivalent; AND
    • At least one year of experience performing related work with youth and teens
    DESIRABLE
    • AA degree or some college in the areas of, Recreation, Education, or a related field is desirable.

    Upon selection, additional pre-employment requirements include:
    • Verification of negative Tuberculosis test
    • Fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice)
    • Online background check clearance


    Supplemental Information

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
    Receives immediate supervision from the Program Coordinator. Exercises no supervision.

    Retirement Benefits
    Federal law requires that employees who are not members of the City retirement plan (CalPERS) be covered under an alternate retirement plan (PARS).
    6% of your salary will be deducted for participation in the PARS plan. The City will also contribute 1.5% of your earnings to your PARS account every pay period.

    Paid Time Off
    In accordance with State Law, after 90 days, Temporary/Seasonal employees receive 40 hours to use for sick leave.

    Work and Life
    Temporary/Seasonal employees are eligible for membership at the Milpitas Sports Center.
    Temporary/Seasonal employees are eligible for membership in Commonwealth Credit Union, which offers a broad range of financial and investment services.
    Temporary/Seasonal employees may qualify for Transportation Reduction Incentive Program (TRIP) cash incentive or transit subsidies based on their commute method.

    Health Insurance (Not available to most Temporary/Seasonal Employees)
    Temporary employees in a non-clerical position hired in the Planning, Engineering and Building Divisions may qualify for participation in CalPERS health, Delta Dental and Vision. (per Res. 7062) o Multiple plans available through CalPERS Health; plans with Kaiser rate or lower are paid by the City.

    *Temporary/Seasonal employees are limited to work no more than 1000 hours per Fiscal Year.
