Introduction About the Position:Assists with traffic engineering projects and activities including: traffic operations issues, conducting traffic studies, conducting traffic signs and markings plan reviews for construction projects, review for temporary traffic control plans construction projects.
Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this positio n is $ 36.62 p er hour.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience- A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
- Three years of paraprofessional technician experience in traffic, surveying, drafting, planning, road construction or a related field.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements- Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
- Must possess an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA), American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) or equivalent Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician Certification.
- Must be able to obtain within six months of hire, and maintain throughout tenure, IMSA Signs & Markings Level I & II (or equivalent) certifications.
- Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/section assignment.
Essential Functions Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
- Receives, investigates, and prepares reports on traffic operation issues in the field and responds in a timely manner to citizen concerns and service requests regarding safety issues, traffic control problems, and roadway operational improvements.
- Defines problem areas and makes decisions to effect change and is responsible for those decisions.
- Collects, processes, retrieves and analyzes traffic data from the field including manual and machine vehicle counts, radar speed measurements, classification studies, bicycle and pedestrian counts, and parking utilization and turnover studies.
- Works as part of a team with the Traffic Engineers: providing information and data, making recommendations, and conveying observations to the team for more thorough analysis, if necessary.
- Reviews and approves temporary traffic control plans submitted and makes recommended changes.
- Measures, counts, and makes calculations; issues and completes detailed written work orders for signs, markings and roadway geometric improvements, in a clear and precise manner to ensure that the final product conforms to professional or industry standards.
- Maintains and deploys VMB and speed feed-back trailers.
- Mentors Traffic Engineering staff; creates a work action plan to complete assignments.

- Work is performed in a City office environment and field work environments. Lift, carry, and install traffic counting boxes and equipment weighing approximately 30 pounds; bend and stoop in and around vehicle travel lanes and roadway shoulders.
- Physical agility to move in and out of traffic lanes.
- Operates a motor vehicle, camera, measuring devices, and hand tools including using a 3lb pound hammer.
- Access paved, gravel, or rocky areas.
- Exposure such as: dirt, dust, odors, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, heights, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or bright/dim light.
- Moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of: climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, which may involve some: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing approximately 30 pounds.
- Visual and muscular dexterity to move in and out of traffic. Operate equipment, computer, and two-way radio.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment including: computer, telephone, calculator, copy machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
- Travel to/from various locations.
