    Position Information

    Regional Parks is seeking a Park Ranger Assistant!

    Starting salary at $27.56/hour ($57,521/year) plus a competitive total compensation package!*
    The Position

    As a P ark Ranger Assistant, you will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring park resources, and engaging with the public to promote visitor safety and the protection of our County's diverse natural resources . In addition to assisting the Park Rangers with day-to-day operations, responsibilities will also include:

    • C ollecting, processing, and reporting on camping and park day-use fees
    • Performing park maintenance and janitorial work, including cleaning restrooms and trash pickup
    • P roviding direction to extra-help staff and volunteers
    • S upporting visitors to ensure park rules are followed
    • A ssisting with special park events and festivals
    As an ideal candidate, you will possess many of the following:

    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
    • E xperience providing customer service and handling point of sale cash
    • Th e ability to shift gears quickly and effectively
    • E xperience leading, training, and/or supervising staff or volunteers
    • Ba sic Microsoft Office skills
    • Va lid basic First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and First Responder Certifications are highly desired, but not required during time of application
    • T rainings related to Park Interpretation, emergency skills, and safety skills trainings are highly desired, but not required
    • B ilingual (English/Spanish) skills; are desired but not required

    This recruitment is being conducted to fill a Park Ranger Assistant position in the Regional Parks Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list.     Minimum Qualifications

    Experience: Any experience that directly relates to the above knowledge and abilities. Normally, one season's experience as Park Aide would provide such an opportunity.

    Education: The ability to read and write English and make basic arithmetic calculations at a level for successful job performance is required.

    Enrollment in a college or university with major course work emphasis in park management, natural resources, forestry, environmental studies or closely related field would be helpful.

    Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid Basic First Aid card and a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care card is desirable at time of employment and required after the first six months of employment.
    License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of: park practices and operations such as fee collection, park patrol, and park law enforcement; and ability to use hand tools, work aides, power tools and light machines; principles of supervision; basic first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

    Ability to: follow oral and written instructions; apply first aid to park visitors; perform moderately heavy physical manual labor; detect safety hazards within a park area and report problems to supervisor; deal effectively and tactfully with the public and county personnel; tactfully enforce rules, regulations, laws and ordinances, safely drive and operate light motorized vehicles; work during weekdays, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours, and to wear a uniform.

    The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

    An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
    Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination which evaluates the education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, and other qualifications that you demonstrate in your application and/or response to the supplemental questionnaire. Please be aware that resumes and cover letters are not typically evaluated in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
