    Job Summary

    Under general supervision of the Director of CAPS, the incumbent coordinates Project OCEAN's Suicide Prevention Education, Mentoring Spaces, and Program/Events through a trauma informed and culturally relevant and humble approach to support peer to peer mental health education and mentoring at CSULB. The incumbent will apply mission and values of CAPS to provide a peer centered outreach and prevention program through Project Ocean by collaborating with various campus partners, developing, and training on mental health prevention increasing social connectivity among students, and connecting the student population to the appropriate resources. The Incumbent will lead the Project OCEAN assistant and peer educators, and will provide training/coaching, etc. to peer educators.

    This position provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life and that further enhance the strategic mental health plan, the quality of campus life, retention, and graduation rate. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

    The Incumbent uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts building relationships across campus with a future goal of expansion of the program.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Coordinate Day-to-Day Functions of the CAPS Peer Education/Mentoring Programs - Develop and maintain structure for peer-to-peer programs and program models through evidence-based research and best practices.
    • Coordinate Project OCEAN's Suicide Prevention Education, Mentoring Spaces, and Program/Events - Develop training materials and lead training of the Project OCEAN staff and program materials and content of training and/or be trained in mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and other mental health destigmatization efforts for campus.
    • Lead student assistants and one staff including training and coaching, etc. - Coordinate trainings to the Peer Educators and Mentors. Coordinate and provide QPR train-the trainers-workshops for graduate and undergraduate peer educators as well as other participants.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of mental health issues and best practices in outreach and prevention work relevant to college population. Excellent oral and written communication skills, effective presentation skills, and ability to facilitate an open exchange of ideas among colleagues, staff, administrators, state officials, and the public. Ability to use sound judgment in interpreting issues, making decisions, initiating referrals to other campus offices, departments, individuals, and programs which can provide adjunct assistance as appropriate.

    Ability to articulate work with a theoretical and philosophical foundation. Ability to work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Excellent interpersonal skills required to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Incumbent must have experience in processing, answering, and following up as needed with office mail, phone calls, emails, and in-person visitors. Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, students, parents, prospective students, and CSULB employees. Must possess the ability to understand, interpret and respond (orally and in writing) to a broad range of complex issues, procedures, policies, ideas, information, and instructions. Excellent writing and editing skills (including grammar, sentence construction, and vocabulary) to compose and proofread professional level copy of letters, proposals, reports, meeting notes, invitations, and announcements.

    Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

    Education and Experience

    • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

    • Experience working the field of mental health providing trainings, workshops, and linkage preferred.

    • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Social Work or a disability or a related field may be substituted for three years of professional experience.

    Physical Summary
    • Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

    Licenses / Certificates

    • CA Driver's License preferred to use cart to move staff and or materials to event/program locations.

    Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,276 - $6,157 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,276 - $7,517 per month.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Additional Information
