Job Summary Under general supervision of the Director of CAPS, and led by the CAPS Program Ocean Coordinator, the incumbent assist with coordinating the Peer Education/Mentoring programs with emphasis on mental health prevention efforts for the campus community. This position assist with coordinating programs on outreach and prevention work to reduce social isolation among students and increasing social connectivity among students, including performing day to day operations of the CAPS peer education/mentoring programs.
This position provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life and that further enhance the strategic mental health plan, the quality of campus life, retention, and graduation rate. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities - Assist with Day-to-Day Functions of the CAPS Peer Education/Mentoring Programs: Be trained in suicide prevention, mental health awareness, QPR, as well as other trainings pertaining to students, peer support, mental destigmatization, etc., and maintain up to date practices to ensure the most effective application of process.

- Program Support: Answer, screen and route calls to appropriate party, as well as take messages while maintaining confidentiality.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities Knowledge of mental health issues and best practices in outreach and prevention work for diverse populations. Demonstrated commitment and expertise in working with a diverse community. Demonstrated skill in working with persons of various ages, socioeconomic, cultural and/or education backgrounds. Excellent oral and written communication skills, effective presentation skills, and ability to facilitate an open exchange of ideas among colleagues, staff, administrators, state officials, and the public. Ability to use sound judgment in interpreting issues, making decisions, initiating referrals to other campus offices, departments, individuals, and programs which can provide adjunct assistance as appropriate.
Develop and implement other projects related to retention and/or overall efforts and goals of the program. Excellent interpersonal skills required to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Incumbent must have experience in processing, answering, and following up as needed with office mail, phone calls, emails, and in-person visitors. Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, students, parents, prospective students, and CSULB employees. Must possess the ability to understand, interpret and respond (orally and in writing) to a broad range of complex issues, procedures, policies, ideas, information, and instructions. Experience with editing and proofreading a variety of written documents and publications. Demonstrated skill in conducting research, developing reports, and presenting findings. Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, and procedures to define problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors, formulate logical objective conclusions, recognize alternatives and their implications and in generating solutions to problems as they arise.
Ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused, ant to calm and give focus to others in a fast-paced work environment. Skill in working independently with minimal direction, in setting priorities and schedules and in identifying and adhering to departmental objectives. Ability to apply independent, reasoned judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and technically accurate solutions. Experience in leading student staff and volunteers including motivating, coaching, and training them. Ability to coordinate, organize, and demonstrate command of a complex and continuously changing array of information, dates, places, and people in a systematic way to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort in the process of completing projects or projects associated to the program. Experience with a broad range of Microsoft Office (including Word, Publisher, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel) to ensure that incumbent will be able to prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, forms, brochures, flyers, agendas, minutes, marketing material, and text for printed materials and web pages.

Education and Experience - Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
- Experience working within a mental health setting providing psychoeducation and mental health awareness preferred.
- Occasional evening and or weekends.
Physical Summary Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.
Licenses CA Driver's License preferred. Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $4,841 - $6,156 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.
CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,841 - $6,884 per month.
Benefits Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.
Time Base 1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
