    DEFINITION :
    Performs professional social work services in connection with the treatment of clients in need of mental health services.

    Essential Job Functions

    Conducts interviews with justice-involved individuals (e.g., juveniles, adults), and any other persons (e.g., family, spouse, significant others) deemed necessary to obtain a complete biopsychosocial assessment by conducting interviews wherever the individual is located (e.g., detention facilities, family member’s homes, public locations); scheduling phone and/or virtual meetings; establishing initial rapport; eliciting specific information; and taking accurate notes to assist the attorney in obtaining the family, social, employment, medical, substance abuse, education, developmental, and mental health treatment history regarding the client.

    Develops and recommends a tentative support plan at the direction of and in collaboration with the attorney by assessing the client’s functioning in his/her environmental setting; assessing the client’s psychiatric, biopsychosocial, educational, and developmental needs; and communicating timelines and recommendations to the attorney; in order to assist the attorney in their work, which may include referrals and/or linkage to the appropriate agencies (e.g., housing, community-based mental health, substance use disorder programs, regional center).

    Implements the attorney-approved support plan by attending various meetings (e.g., inter-agency, Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), regional center) at the direction of the attorney to provide advocacy to the client; coordinating with representatives from various agencies; and making referrals and/or linkage to the appropriate agencies (e.g., housing, community-based mental health, substance use disorder programs, regional center); in order to support the client and attorney through the legal process.

    Assists the attorney as part of the defense team at the direction of the attorney by gathering and reviewing information (e.g., interviews, school reports, psychological evaluations, medical reports) regarding the client; creating and providing clinical assessments to the attorney; providing written reports (e.g., confidential reports) to the attorney; consulting with the attorney regarding the biopsychosocial needs of the client; and attending court as needed with the defense team; in order to assist the attorney in their work.

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
    A Master's degree* from an accredited school of social work**.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION :
    *In order to receive credit for any degree, you must include a legible copy of the official diploma, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows degree has been conferred and the area of specialization with your application at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from application submission. Note: Foreign studies must be evaluated by an academic credential evaluation and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the United States. (See Accreditation Information under Employment Information).

    **Master of Social Work graduates must become registered as an Associate Clinical Social Worker with the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences within sixty (60) days from commencement of employment with the County of Los Angeles. Active and valid Associate Clinical Social Worker registration must be maintained continuously until successful completion of the examination process for licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Registered Associate Clinical Social Workers must obtain licensure within six (6) years from the original date of registration with the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences. Failure to obtain licensure within the aforementioned timeframes may result in termination.

    LICENSE :
    A valid and active Associate Clinical Social Worker registrationissued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences.

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS :
    2 - Light: Positions within this class require light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

    OUR ASSESSMENT PROCESS:
    The examination will consist of an evaluation of Training & Experience, weighted 100%,evaluating your experience:
    • interacting with justice-involved individuals
    • handling client cases
    • supporting the work of attorneys
    • conducting biopsychosocial assessments
    Candidates must meet the REQUIREMENTS and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION :
    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    VACANCY INFORMATION :
    The resulting eligible register will be used to fill vacancies with the Department of Alternate Public Defender.
