    Description

    Yuba County Probation is currently recruiting for the position of Probation Aide. Under general supervision, assist professional and technical staff in providing a variety of casework and program support associated with the monitoring of adult and juvenile probationer cases; provide routine and structured office, community and client support to department programs including completing necessary forms and documents, serving notices, conducting diligent searches, and providing support for deputized probation officers; and related work as assigned.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Essential:

    • Obtain information and other documentation from clients participating in a Probation program.

    • Provide transportation to and from appointments, interviews and medical or community agency locations.

    • Assist probation officers with performing caseload management activities; review cases; schedule appointments, prepare informal contracts and enter progress notes in case files.

    • Perform duties related to program administrative and clerical support; annotate and file information such as phone calls, letters, appointments, drug tests and a variety of forms and documents.

    • Collect urine samples for drug and alcohol testing; conduct and read test results; recommend consequences for positive reading; document results and inform probation officer.

    • Maintain program statistics and prepare a variety of reports.

    • Interview adult and juvenile misdemeanants and felony probationers and family members; explain the terms and conditions of probation.

    Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate will build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, the public, coworkers, County employees, and agency representatives. You should be able to work independently when needed but thrive in a team environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential for this role.

    Education and Experience:

    MINIMUM: 30 college level semester units from an accredited college or institution in a related field (including but not limited to Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology) and one year of experience in a related field.

    PREFERRED: In addition to the minimum, an Associate’s degree in a related field and additional years of experience working with juvenile or adult offenders, children and families, the elderly, disabled, and/or dependent adults or within the criminal justice field.

    Working Conditions: Potential exposure to contagious or infectious diseases or hazardous substance and chemicals; may work with hostile or abusive individuals.

    Licenses & Certifications: Ability to obtain a valid CA Class C Driver’s License within ten (10) days of employment and maintain throughout employment.

    Special Requirements: Must successfully complete an extensive and thorough background investigation which may include Live Scan fingerprinting prior to hire. DMV printout prior to hire. Will be required to perform disaster service activities pursuant to Government Code 3100-3109.

    SOCIAL SECURITY: Yuba County does not participate in the Social Security Program

    MEDICARE: Yuba County does participate in the Medicare Program.

    STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE: SDIprovides benefits to employees who are unable to work due to non-work-related illness or injury. Paid Family Leave (PFL) automatically covers persons covered by SDI.

    MEDICAL: Yuba County offers several medical plan options (HMO and PPO plans available based on eligibility) through CalPERS. To reference the current Rate Sheet, please visit Health Insurance and see General Resources.

    DENTAL/VISION INSURANCE: The County pays 100% of the Basic plan premiums for employee or 80% for employee and eligible dependent(s). Requires participation in Health Insurance benefits.

    *Health Waiver Opt-out of $250/monthly available with proof of other Non-Covered CA, employer sponsored health care coverage.

    LIFE INSURANCE: County provides $50,000 in life insurance coverage. Employees may purchase additional coverage for themselves and dependents.

    EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: County paid confidential counseling program for up to 5 visits per incident per eligible family member.

    DEFERRED COMPENSATION: One Voluntary Deferred Compensation plan is available.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE:

    A completed supplemental questionnaire is an essential part of the examination process for this position. The responses will be reviewed for sufficient detail and will be rated according to pre-determined guidelines. Please include; 1) Places of employment; 2) pertinent dates; 3) duties performed, etc. when responding to the questions. If a job included responsibilities applicable to several questions, separate the different functions of the job to answer all the questions completely.     INTERVIEW SCREENING:

    Interview screening is an extension of the application process. Used as a secondary a method of screening large applicant pools.

    EXAM:

    Applicants who have successfully met the minimum qualifications and completed any screening processes must successfully complete the Cooperative Personnel Services (CPS) Exam with a passing score to continue to the next phase of the recruitment process. The CPS Exam may potentially be administered online using County computers.

    PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT: MISC.

    All applicants that successfully complete the examination process and are certified to the employment list, will be notified and must submit a complete Personal History Statement to the Probation Department at the time of interview. A review of the PHS will be conducted for each candidate to determine which candidates best meet the professional standard criteria adopted by the Department.

    TESTING ACCOMMODATION:

    WAIVER OF SELECTION PROCEDURES:

    When selection procedures have been publicly announced and the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications for the position is five or less, the Human Resources Director may, at her/his discretion; a) Waive the competition entirely and submit the names of the applicants meeting the minimum qualifications to the appointing department, b) Revise the conditions of competition to a more practical basis under the circumstances.

    EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY LIST:

    An employment eligibility list is established for those applicants who successfully pass all phases of the examination process. This list will be held for a minimum of six (6) months from the date the list is certified. For each vacancy the top five (5) ranks on the list will be certified to the department for final selection, which will include a departmental interview.

    DEPARTMENTAL INTERVIEW:

    The Probation department will notify the applicant of the date and time of his/her interview. The applicant will be asked a series of questions about his/herself and his/her related experience, education and training that exhibit the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the job. The applicant may also be asked questions about hypothetical situations to test his/her ability to make decisions and use sound judgment and common sense.
