    DESCRIPTION

    THE DEPARTMENT

    The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million.     POSITION
    Under general supervision, patrols an assigned area and enforces the statutes the State of California Vehicle Code and ordinances of the City of Long Beach or other regulations relating to parking and/or standing of vehicles; marks tires of vehicles parked in restricted zones and cites vehicles parked in excess of posted time limits; operates a City vehicle and automated hand-held ticket writer and printer; accompanies street-sweeping equipment and cites vehicles in violation of posted street sweeping signs and other parking restrictions; issues citations to vehicles parked in expired metered parking spots; detects and reports inoperative parking meters; reports suspicious, irregular or dangerous conditions to the Long Beach Police Department or appropriate agency; provides information to the public regarding statues and ordinances relating to parking and other matters; identifies and reports damaged, defaced, covered or improperly posted parking signs and unenforceable curbs; may remove debris that impedes the progress of street sweeping vehicles and/or equipment, may testify in court regarding parking or standing violations; may arrange for vehicles to be towed and impounded when applicable; may direct traffic in accordance with applicable municipal code provisions and/or secure area perimeters for accidents, floods, power outages or other events; may use a Mobile Data Terminal; may access the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS); may operate an Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR); may act in a lead/ supervisory capacity; performs other duties as required.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • In accordance with applicable provisions of the California Vehicle Code, issues notices of violation of statues of the State of California, ordinances of the City of Long Beach, and regulations issued relating to the parking or standing of vehicles.
    • Travels with street sweeping personnel and cites those vehicles parked in excess of posted street sweeping signs, parking signs, and restricted zones.
    • Marks tires of vehicles parked in time zones and cites those vehicles parked in excess of posted time limits.
    • Detects and reports inoperative parking meters.
    • Reports unenforceable curbs and defaced signs.
    • Enforces permit parking in City lots and City streets.
    • May appear in court to testify when applicable.
    • Provides information to the public regarding statutes and ordinances relating to parking and other matters.
    • Performs other duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    • A minimum of one year of progressively responsible full time equivalent, paid work experience providing service and assistance to the public.
    • Willingness to work overtime, weekend and/or holiday hours.
    • A valid driver's license is required and must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection.
