    Position Summary:

    The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education in the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track 12-month position as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Animal Science (Dairy). This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching undergraduate/graduate courses (lower division animal/dairy science courses, upper-division core animal/dairy science courses, graduate courses), scholarship (research in field of interest, grants, etc.), and service (student advising, committee work, etc.). Specifically, development of an active applied research program; serving as an advisor to student organizations (i.e. Dairy Science); advising undergraduate students; participate collaboratively with other faculty at the University Agricultural Laboratory; participate in outreach conferences, activities and programs within the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences & Technology relative to attracting and retaining undergraduates and graduate students; serve on appropriate College and University committees; and to be an active member in professional organizations and associations. The successful candidate will participate in department, college, and university events, and serve on department, college and/or university committees. Undergraduate and graduate advising is considered an integral component of the position. The successful candidate will provide faculty supervision and management oversight at the university dairy. Additionally, the candidate will coordinate/coach at least one of the following: Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Team, Dairy Challenge Team, and/or Dairy Cattle Show Team based on interest and expertise. Management of the annual FFA Dairy Judging Contest and service on department, college and/or university committees is expected.

    Qualifications:

    Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
    An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Animal Science, Dairy Science or other closely-related discipline from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; however, for appointment, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2025
    Required Experience:
    Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate dairy, and/or animal science courses (teaching experience as a graduate assistant is acceptable); Experience with commercial dairy operations including production, cow comfort, herd health, reproduction, nutrition and/or waste management; Expressed interest in effective undergraduate teaching and willingness to teach graduate courses; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Demonstrated knowledge/experience to conduct applied research and pursue extramural funding; and Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    Demonstrate the ability to interact with students, colleagues, producer groups, industry stakeholders, government agencies, allied industries, media and the general public; Possess experience with the management of dairy operations including production, herd health, financial budgeting and marketing; Documented record of applied research, publications, and seeking and/or securing extramural funding; and Have experience advising undergraduate and/or graduate students, as well as student organizations.

    Overview:

    The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education offers options in agricultural communications, teacher preparation, basic animal science (pre-professional), pre-veterinary medicine, livestock business management, dairy science, equine science, and meat technology. Courses integrate animal evaluation, behavior, disease, environment management, genetics, health, marketing, muscle biology, nutrition, physiology, production, and reproduction. Instruction in the animal science disciplines is enhanced through practical application at the various farm laboratory units. The facilities include the Beef, Dairy, Poultry, Meat Lab, Quarter Horse, Sheep, and Swine units which are maintained to support this academic endeavor. The department is proud of the university farm laboratory facility so close to the main campus. The department has many activities that students can participate in from competitive teams to clubs.

    The San Joaquin Valley has been the world's top agricultural producer since the 1940s, with over 220 commercial crops grown throughout the six counties. California is the nation's leading dairy state, producing 20% of all the milk consumed in the nation. Fresno and neighboring Tulare counties are the nation's top producing dairy counties, with milk value in excess of $2B annually. California has about 1 million beef cows and ranks in the top 10 states in the U.S. for cattle in feedlots. In addition, California ranks second in the nation in horse numbers with about 500,000 horses
