    DESCRIPTION

    THE DEPARTMENT
    The Office of the City Prosecutor is one of the busiest municipal prosecuting agencies in country, handling approximately 10,000 cases each year. The City Prosecutor's Office is also considered a national leader in innovative court diversion programs and community-based prosecution, giving it the distinction of being a model for other prosecuting agencies.     This office invites applications for the position of Prosecutor Assistant. This non-attorney position requires an ability to perform tasks in a variety of support functions in the City Prosecutor's Office. Prior criminal law or criminal justice experience is desirable, but not required. Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Khmer) candidates of any experience level are especially encouraged to apply.     EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Perform a variety of legal clerical work requiring independent judgment, accuracy and speed.
    • Draft or assist with motions and declarations.
    • Type and prepare pleadings and other documents for filing with court.
    • Reviews and edits legal documents ensuring accuracy. Identify and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting.
    • Assist with trial preparation and coordinating witnesses.
    • Create and maintain case files.
    • Utilize one or more computer applications for research or data entry.
    • Interact with customers and public to answer questions and provide information.
    • May be assigned specialized tasks in addition to assigned duties.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • At least three to five or more years of paid, full-time equivalent experience at the level of a legal secretary, legal assistant, or paralegal in a criminal justice agency or legal office or a closely related field.
    • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required.
    • Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Knowledge of the criminal justice process and criminal filing procedures along with various law enforcement systems such as CLETS/DMV, CHHRS, Justice Partner Portal (JPP), etc.
    • Experience with case management software.
    • Familiarity with legal terminology, legal formats including briefs, motions, subpoenas, recordkeeping systems and local and state courts.
    • Ability to type minimum 45 wpm accurately.
    • A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
    • Prior public sector experience is a plus.

    • Ability to utilize sound judgment to address and resolve routine and complex issues.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and instruction while exercising good judgment.
    • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to competing work priorities and deadlines.
    • Cultivate a mindset of curiosity and desire to embrace new learning opportunities and willingness to learn new things.
    • Ability to handle confidential issues in a professional manner.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including but not limited to Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, Forms, including Adobe Acrobat.
