    PURPOSE:

    Under the immediate supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Technologies (CAT), the Accessibility Specialist is a professional who applies advanced skills in accessibility, technical project planning, and stakeholder management to lead and manage complex accessibility development and improvement initiatives at the university.

    The specialist supports the university in utilizing technology to enhance teaching and learning while also promoting universal design for learning across the campus's technological environment. Accomplished in document and media accessibility, the specialist works with the Accessibility Technology Initiative Directors, Steering Committee, faculty, staff, and administrators to design and remediate accessible instructional and informational materials. Through workshops, training, and collaboration, the specialist ensures compliance with accessibility standards and fosters an innovative, comprehensive accessibility support infrastructure.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Coordinates services providing document remediation for universal access, including:

    • Recruitment and oversight of student staff
    • Workflow management


    Collaborates with campus partners in improving universal access in the areas of:

    • Consultation in best practices for accessibility
    • Marketing and outreach to department chairs and faculty as needed
    • Policy consultation, research, and implementation
    • Data collection and reporting.


    Consults with IT partners, campus student disability office, and University Personnel on appropriate assistive technologies (hardware and software) configuration; coordinates training to university staff and end-users as needed. Collaborates with instructional designers to create professional development and training for staff and faculty in support of universal access through various modalities. Participates on the campus ATI committees and sub-committees, and on ATI conference calls with the Office of the Chancellor (instructional materials, web, and executive committee). Maintains the highest level of certifications available for accessibility concepts, procedures, and technical skills, including existing and emerging technologies.

    Other Functions:

    Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of applying standard theories, principles, practice, and techniques applicable to a university/higher education environment; operational analysis and techniques; excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Experience in investigating and analyzing problems that have broad administrative impact and implications. Strong systems background as a user or functional developer. Experience in using spreadsheets, database query tools and word processing software applications at an advanced level; using/supporting campus core enterprise systems such as Oracle-PeopleSoft (Campus Solutions/Student Administration) and/or other information systems. In addition, produce or retrofit content for accessibility, using tools such as Ally, MS Office and Adobe Acrobat documents, and audio and video transcription/captioning.

    Ability to: Research, develop and evaluate policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; quickly learn features of new software releases and modules, anticipate problems and address them proactively; analyze data requirements and research data availability; train/mentor others on systems skills and procedures, with the ability to communicate system/technical concepts and ideas to non-system/technical individuals; work as a team member; independently handle multiple work unit priorities and projects; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    A basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite for this position. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Working knowledge of automated desktop management tools in an enterprise environment, common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

    SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

    • Ability to produce or retrofit content for accessibility, Including MS Office and Adobe Acrobat documents, and audio and video.
    • Strong ability to determine needs/problems, analyze and provide appropriate solutions within operational guidelines, and effectively document and communicate changes, solutions, and procedures.
    • Ability to communicate with and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and members of the community In one-to-one or group settings. Strong personal initiative and ability to work reliably and independently with minimal supervision. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts and Ideas to non-technical individuals.
    • Strong interpersonal skills that promote professionalism and mutual respect in all interactions. Ability to work effectively and Independently In a diverse university environment. Ability to Independently handle multiple work unit priorities and projects. Exceptional ability to communicate in a professional, persuasive, and tactful manner both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated record of a strong customer service orientation. Demonstrates success in working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

    Hands on experience and knowledge of: accessibility practices and assistive technologies, including specific software and hardware for testing accessibility. Knowledge of alternate media production techniques in related assistive technologies, use of assistive computer technologies for blind, low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, physically disabled and learning disabled students. Experience In instructional design and training development. Experience program development and evaluation methods.

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

    Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
