    SALARY:

    $24.00 - $29.18 / Hour

    $4,160.00 - $5,057.00 / Monthly

    ISSUE DATE: 11/18/2024 FILING DEADLINE: 12/9/2024 at 1:00 PM Pacific Time

    THE POSITION: In a learning capacity, and on an assigned shift, receives and acts upon emergency and non-emergency calls in accordance with established policies and procedures. Under direction of the shift supervisor, receives emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio calls and dispatches equipment, operates a computer aided dispatch system, and performs related work as required.

    Representative Duties

    Operates communications equipment; Instructs the public on proper medical techniques under emergency situations; Secures and records incident information; Refers inquiries to appropriate public and private agencies; Continually monitors the status of fire units; Logs all departmental emergency activity; Sends and receives telephone messages; Prepares and type reports.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Applications will be accepted only from those applicants who properly complete the application and clearly demonstrate on the application, supplemental questionnaire, and typing certificate that they possess the minimum qualifications which include:
    • Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED examination
    • Ability to type 35 net words per minute
    • Must successfully pass a background investigation

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience in dispatching, emergency services, or two-way radio operations
    • Ability to adequately perform multiple concurrent tasks;
    • Ability to respond quickly and efficiently to emergency situations by obtaining and relaying critical information
    • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
    • Customer Service experience


    CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT: All applicants must submit a Typing Certificate (dated within the last two years of application submittal) certifying 35 NET words per minute with the application. Note: Certificates obtained on-line are acceptable . Please click here for Typing Certificate Locations .

    EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT : All applicants MUST be able to work shift work, which includes the night shift, weekends, and holidays. There is a shift differential paid to employees working the night shift.

    Shift differential pay: $0.90 or $1.25 per hour depending on assigned shift.

    Examination (Weighted: 100%)

    EXAMINATIONS : All applicants will be notified via e-mail of date, time, and place of exams. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION (WEIGHTED: PASS/FAIL) December 19, 2024 (TENTATIVE): The written exam is the first phase of the examination process for the Fire Dispatcher I candidates and includes questions related to reasoning and problem solving, public contact, telephone communication skills, name and number matching, deductive and inductive reasoning, map reading, and interpretation and reactive learning. *NOTE: The pass point may be set to include those applicants with the TOP WRITTEN EXAM SCORES.

    ORAL APPRAISAL INTERVIEW (WEIGHTED 100%) W eek of January 6, 2025(TENTATIVE): An appraisal will be made of the applicant's education, training, experience, and personal qualifications for the position. Minimum rating of 70% is required.

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION (WEIGHTED: PASS/FAIL): Prior to appointment, applicants must successfully complete an investigation of their personal history and background to determine suitability for this position with the Bakersfield Fire Department.

    • Blue & White Miscellaneous Unit
    • Fire Safety Unit
    • Police Safety Unit

    VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
    1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
    5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
    14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

    VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
    1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
    5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
    16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

    HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

    SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

    ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

    INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).

    RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
