    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and plus Nurse Practitioner certification in area of specialty plus three (3) years of experience in hospital or public health nursing


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • License to practice nursing in the State of Texas.
    • Must be credentialed as an advanced Nurse Practitioner by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
    • Basic Life Support Certification for Healthcare providers


    Physical Requirements:
    Light. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty (20) pounds.

    This position will perform medical assessments for City of Austin first responders. Medical assessments will include promotional exams, annual physicals, hiring exams and tele-medicine visits. This will include securing and evaluating complete medical histories of patient. Referring patients to physicians or consultations when clinical exam/findings are not covered by standardized clinical protocols. Introducing innovations in health programs.

    Travel:
    If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    $42.26 - $54.94 per hour

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    Perform physical assessment of patient using observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion. Referral of patients to physicians or consultation when clinical exam/findings are not covered by standardized clinical protocols. Treatment of patients following standardized protocols and clinical guidelines. Secure and evaluate complete medical histories of patient. Select, train and direct subordinate members of the health care team. Provide counseling to families on health maintenance of chronic diseases, nutrition, family planning, general health care, preventable illnesses, cancer screening and minor accidents. Assist families in utilizing health resources available. Plan, promote, demonstrate, recommend and coordinate high standards of nursing practice. Manage patient and daily care programs in the area of specialty. Introduce innovations in nursing care and health programs

    • May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.


    • Knowledge of the practice of nursing and of the clinical nursing specialty.
    • Knowledge of instruments, equipment and mechanical devices employed in the specialty area of patient care.
    • Knowledge of the relationship between the clinical specialty and public health programs.
    • Knowledge of community organizations and health programs.
    • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
    • Skill in establishing an effective and constructive working relationship with patients, families, physicians, departmental personnel, City employees and the general public.

    City Government
