    Minimum Qualifications
    Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of custodial, building maintenance or construction work.

    Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    Texas Class “C” Operator’s License.

    The Maintenance Worker II will assist in the preventative maintenance and general repairs of all Austin Public Library interior and exterior facilities. Applicants should be skilled in carpentry, construction, painting, flooring, plumbing, and irrigation repairs.

    • This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a city-designated extraordinary situation or emergency condition, essential employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees, as well as ensure the continuity of essential operations. Essential Employees may be called back in during such events, required to modify their schedule, assigned to a City-designated work site, or retained on-site to assist with operations and recovery.

    Pay Range
    $21.63 - $23.79

    Hours
    Temporary position (40 hours per week)

    • Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (1st shift)
    • Monday - Friday, 1:00 p.m. - 8::00 p.m. and Saturday’s 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (2nd shift)


    Note:
    • Hours may vary based on operational or business needs; evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required on occasion.
    • Must be able to respond to off-hour emergencies.
    • May occasionally work beyond assigned shift.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Professional experience in the following building trades: construction, carpentry, painting, drywall, plumbing, irrigation, flooring, and electrical work.
    • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and professional drawings.
    • Experience with work orders.
    • Experience as a locksmith, installing and repairing locks.
    • Skilled in using hand and power tools.
    • Ability to climb ladders and use aerial, scissors, and forklift.
    • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours, weekends, and possible holidays.
    • Ability to push/pull and lift 50 lbs.
    • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    1. Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance. Performs minor repairs to tables, chairs, cabinets, etc. Installs or replaces floor and ceramic tiles. Repairs or replaces electric plugs and cords.
    2. Drives vehicles as needed.
    3. Moves furniture, file cabinets, equipment, etc. using hand dollies.
    4. Performs service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc.
    5. Repacks, changes oil/filters, lubricates, etc.
    6. Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc. Operate various power saws, i.e., radial arm, skill, etc. Operates acetylene cutting torch, welder, etc.
    7. Performs basic plumbing installations/repairs i.e., install and repair faucets, unclog drains, replace valves, etc.
    8. Measures using tapes, transits, levels, etc.
    9. Performs semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc.
    10. Reads profiles/blueprints.

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in moderate levels of construction, i.e. building walls, hanging doors and windows.

    Skill in oral and written communication.
    Skill in planning and organizing.
    Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    Ability to operate power tools.
