    Description

    The Attorney Investigator performs legal and investigative work related to proposed and existing guardianships. Employee is responsible for scheduling hearings on guardianship and monitoring the proceedings. This position prepares and presents reports to the attorneys when necessary and coordinates required information through interviews with medical personnel, family members, friends, doctors, fellow employees of the alleged incapacitated person, social workers, and anyone associated with or has knowledge of the proposed ward.

    Examples of Duties

    Reviews and evaluates Guardianship case filings to monitor mandatory statutory requirements are met; monitors all aspects of ongoing cases; Investigates non-compliance as needed.
    Files pleadings and attends court hearings and makes recommendations as to outcome of hearings.
    Communicates electronically, in person, and via telephone with filing attorneys, appropriate court staff, and parties of the case regarding the results of the file review, and schedule appropriate interviews.
    Interviews applicants, medical professionals, caregivers, social workers, attorneys, and proposed wards.
    Meets and observes clients and applicants; reviews incoming applications to identify which ones fit the criteria of the program.
    Supervises, advises, and coordinates with the probate investigators on complex guardianship matters for proper development of cases.
    Serves as the court officer contact in coordinating case activity with county contractors, other Denton Departments, local community agencies, and various state agencies.
    Recruits, trains, and supervises law student interns/volunteers to visit, report, and provide follow-up monitoring of existing guardianship cases.
    Interviews and networks with community partners and agencies to identify possible program partners.
    Provides court instruction to newly appointed guardians, and follow-up with them if complaints are received.
    Conducts legal research and documents case resources as needed.
    Regular and punctual attendance is required.
    Performs other related duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Doctoral degree and minimum three years of experience in a related field required.
    Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
    Bachelor's degree in social work, nursing, or related field preferred. Social Work license preferred.
    Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred, but not required.
