    DESCRIPTION

    Salary Information:

    $3,444.64 - $4,692.56 Bi-Weekly

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under direction, performs senior-level and highly specialized assignments in the testing and analyzing of organic constituents; performs organic chemical analyses of potable water and other environmental samples for water quality assessment and evaluation; performs annual proficiency analyses on test samples to maintain laboratory accreditation; selects, adapts or develops methods and techniques for conducting tests and analyses as required by Standard Methods, EPA or research projects; performs trace analysis on potable and wastewater samples by using gas chromatograph, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, high performance liquid chromatograph, total organic carbon analyzer and total organic halide analyzer; prepares calibration standards, reagents and working solutions for analyses; maintains laboratory instrumentation and test equipment through troubleshooting and preventative maintenance; maintains test records and files; maintains laboratory QA/QC program to ensure data and resulting decisions are technically sound, valid and updated; assigns and reviews the work of subordinate personnel; prepares and present written reports for state and federal regulatory agencies; and performs other related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science or closely-related field

    AND

    Five years (5) of full-time equivalent paid technical-laboratory experience as a chemist or analyst.

    At least three years of the required experience MUST have been gained in a position using gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer to analyze drinking water and/or environmental samples by EPA methods.

    Opportunities for Substitution of Education or Experience

    A Master's degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience (Proof required).

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: An advanced degree is desirable. A copy of degree or transcripts indicating the date of graduation MUST be submitted with the application.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of materials, equipment, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and/or practices used in organic chemical testing of drinking water and/or environmental samples and California Safety and Health Act regulations.

    Willingness to work weekends, holidays, overtime and on an emergency basis as necessary.

    A valid driver's license may be required and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection interview.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    EXAMINATION WEIGHTS:

    Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be place on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period. Qualified candidates meeting the minimum qualifications with applications received by Friday, December 6, 2024, will be placed on Test #01established eligible list for this recruitment. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
