    PLANT MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

    The City of Olathe’s Environmental Services Division wants YOU to join our team of talented and dedicated employees that provide critical water related services to the City of Olathe residents. In 2023, our award-winning water production facility treated 5 billion gallons of drinking water for an average daily demand of over 13 million gallons per day while our two NACWA Gold award winning wastewater treatment plants treated a combined average of 6.4 million gallons per day. Our Plant Maintenance group works to make sure our Drinking Water Production, Wastewater Treatment, and Environmental Lab are fully functioning so that we consistently meet or exceed all federal and state regulations while delivering exceptional services to City of Olathe residents.

    As a Plant Maintenance Technician, you’ll play a key role in supporting the City’s Water Plant, Wastewater Plants, and Environmental Lab by maintaining essential infrastructure, ensuring operational efficiency, and upholding quality and safety standards.     Plant Maintenance Technician I: One year or more of experience in a related field such as HVAC technician, plumber, electrician, or mechanical maintenance is preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized courses in a related field are preferred. A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required. A Class I Plant Maintenance Technologist certification is required within 24 months of employment. Pay Range: $21.75 to $26.51/hour depending on experience.

    Plant Maintenance Technician II: Two years of relevant experience in water/wastewater equipment, facility maintenance, or equivalent experience in a related field is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized courses in water or wastewater plant maintenance or related fields is preferred. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class II Plant Maintenance Technologist certification is required within 24 months of employment. Progress toward certification as one of the following is preferred: HVAC master technician, master plumber, master electrician, or mechanical maintenance technician. Pay Range: $23.75 to $29.11/hour depending on experience.

    Plant Maintenance Technician III: Five years of relevant experience in water/wastewater equipment, facility maintenance, or experience in a related field is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; specialized courses in water or wastewater plant maintenance required. A vocational certificate or associates degree in a related field is preferred. A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class III Plant Maintenance Technologist certification within 24 months of employment is required. Certification as one of the following is preferred: HVAC master technician, master plumber, master electrician, or mechanical maintenance technician. Pay Range: $25.50 to $31.81/hour depending on experience.

    Work Schedule:
    7:00 AM to 3:30 PM M-F. May become eligible for 4 10-hour shifts per week following introductory period. Will participate in on-call rotation.

    Job Summary

    The Plant Maintenance Technician I employs entry-level mechanical skills to maintain, and repair industrial equipment and facilities essential for drinking water production, wastewater treatment and related infrastructure. Committed to working safely, they execute scheduled preventive maintenance across operations applying attention to detail to identify and report potential maintenance issues. Under the supervision of experienced team members, they troubleshoot and repair increasingly complex systems. This is the first in a three-level career progression of Plant Maintenance Technician I, II, and III.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Conducts preventive and corrective maintenance on specialized and complex industrial equipment used in drinking water production and wastewater treatment such as pumps, mixers, motors, blowers, valves, actuators, and water and wastewater lines.
    • Skillfully operates an extensive range of tools, machinery, and mobile equipment, spanning from precision hand tools to advanced medium-duty equipment and sophisticated electronic testing devices.
    • Engages in troubleshooting, repair, and replacement tasks. Collaborates with operations and maintenance teams to identify and implement improvements. With on-the-job training and oversight from senior technicians, builds HVAC skillset and electrical system competency.
    • Performs work as assigned by Supervisor or Superintendent. Manages and updates maintenance logs and records using Cartegraph asset management software. Handles procurement of supplies and parts when necessary.
    • Escorts vendors performing contracted services to work site working to communicate between the contractor and Supervisor and Superintendent when needed.
    • Fulfills on-call duties and overtime as required. Actively participates in City and departmental team building and safety initiatives.


    Qualifications

    Experience: One year or more of experience in a related field such as HVAC technician, plumber, electrician, or mechanical maintenance is preferred.

    Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized courses in a related field are preferred.

    License or Certificate: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class I Plant Maintenance Technologist certification is required within 24 months of employment.

    Environmental or Physical Demands: The Plant Maintenance Technicians perform work that will expose one to wet/humid conditions, inclement weather, indoor/outdoor extreme heat/cold temperatures, high noise areas, fumes and/or chemicals. This work involves working at heights and/or within confined spaces. On occasion, work requires wearing a respirator. Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, climb and descend stairs and ladders, and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach forward/overhead, crouch, bend, kneel, and crawl sometimes while carrying items. This position requires the use of personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, safety glasses, safety boots, hardhat, and gloves.
