Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position DutiesSalary range(s) for this classification is $ 106,204.80 - $ 129,188.80 . Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.
The Department of Public Works is seeking to fill one (1) Senior Air Conditioning Mechanic position. This position is responsible for managing the HVAC maintenance duties at facilities serviced by the City of San Jos é .
R esponsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Lead HVAC maintenance crew, equipment maintenance, maintenance program administration, and computer-controlled systems operation.
- Operate, maintain , and repair state-of-the-art pumping, heating, refrigeration, ventilating and cooling systems and related equipment found in modern large-scale office and public buildings.
- Must have knowledge of modern Building Automation Systems.
- Maintain and troubleshoot low pressure boilers.
- Respond to and resolve HVAC mechanic personnel issues.
- Assess problems, devise quality solutions, and provide budgetary estimations for resolution.
- Review work performed by HVAC mechanics, facility repair workers and support contractors performing air conditioning related work.
- Specify, plan, review and inspect work by contracted mechanics and controls specialists to ensure adherence to plans and specifications.
- Review operational energy efficiency of equipment maintained by contractors to ensure adherence to City Energy Management guidelines.
- Manage preventative maintenance schedules for HVAC and related equipment.
- Interact and communicate tactfully with staff, customers, and the public.
- Manage multiple assignments, prioritize and reprioritize work when resources are not available.
This is the senior level in the Air Conditioning series. Incumbents in this class supervise Air Conditioning Mechanics and perform the more difficult installation, operation, adjustment, troubleshooting, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, refrigerating and cooling systems and auxiliary equipment. This class differs from the lower class of Air Conditioning Mechanic in that incumbents of the latter perform HVAC work under the general supervision of a Senior Air Conditioning Mechanic.

Minimum QualificationsEducation: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the operations, repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and cooling systems , which are common to large buildings.
Other QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:
Job expertise - Experience maintaining large air conditioning systems including cooling towers, chillers, pumps, water treatment, VAVs, etc.; experience with computer software, modern building automation systems and related software.
Communication Skills - Communicates and listens effectively and responds in a timely , effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate , complete, current; well-organized, legible, concise, neat and in proper grammatical form.
Customer Service - Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customer’s needs and delivers services effectively and efficiently in a timely manner ; accurate , respectful, and friendly manner. Understands stakeholder perspective to seek the most reasonable and effective resolution to issues.
Leadership Skills - Leads by example; serves as appropriate role model, demonstrates high ethical standards. Remains visible and approachable and interacts with others on a regular basis; promotes a cooperative work environment, encourages and rewards risk-taking, allowing others to learn from mistakes.
Problem Solving - Approaches a situation or a problem by defining the problem or issue; determines the significance of the problem(s), collects information, uses logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions to problems that achieve the desired outcome.
Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - Demonstrates a positive attitude and flexibility along with the ability to develop effective relationships with coworkers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
