    Role

    This announcement is for Lateral Deputy Sheriff applicants.

    - Must be currently sworn law enforcement officers and possess valid POST certificate.
    -Please review AZPOST requirements.


    Under general supervision, performs duties in the protection of life and/or property through enforcement of laws. May be assigned to work on patrol, at headquarters, on special assignments, or as plainclothes investigators.

    Major Duties, Responsibilities

    • Patrols areas of the County in a vehicle to preserve law and order, prevent and discover the commission of crime, and enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations and correct traffic hazards.
    • Answer calls and complaints received by radio, telephone, or in person involving emergency, disorder, and crime.
    • Interviews persons with complaints or inquiries, takes statements and tends to proper disposition of the information or directs them to proper authorities.
    • Conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, and locates witnesses.
    • Makes arrests and/or transports prisoners to jail.
    • Appears in court to present evidence and/or testify as required.
    • Conducts specialized investigations and raids.
    • Conducts police related community awareness and public relations work.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:
    No experience required

    Additional Requirements:

    Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.

    Must meet and possess Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST) Peace Officer Certification or a certificate of successful completion of the waiver of training process prescribed by AZPOST Rule R13 4 110(D).

    All persons applying for employment with the Sheriff’s Office shall be required to meet the following general qualifications: integrity, honesty, dependability, industry thoroughness, accuracy, good judgment, initiative, and courtesy.
    All persons will be required to complete a thorough background investigation to include, but not limited to polygraph, psychological, and physical fitness test.
    All persons must successfully complete a minimum six (6) month probation period.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • Policies, rules, laws, and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement work.
    • Principles of human behavior.
    • Functions of the criminal justice system, restraint procedures, and court proceedings.
    • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
    • Clerical office practices and procedures.
    • Research techniques and report writing.
    • Current Microsoft Office software.
    • Filing and recordkeeping.

    Skill in:
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Organization and adherence to detail.

    Ability to:
    • Read, understand, interpret, and apply complex policies, rules, laws, and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement work.
    • Write clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
    • React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
    • Record details about names, faces, and incidents quickly, clearly, and accurately.
    • Accurately and effectively discharge a rifle, shotgun, and handgun with left and right hands.
    • Subdue a violent and/or uncooperative person by methods requiring physical force.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
    • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
    • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
    • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
    • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.


    Work Environment:
    The work environment is associated with an office and various field environments and includes exposure to loud noise, bloodborne pathogens, dust, fumes, and chemicals.

    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability balance, climb, kneel, bend, crouch, and to lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Performs work that requires good physical strength and condition to apply restraining techniques, defensive tactics, react to physical confrontations and emergency situations, may lift and/or carry people, supplies, equipment and/or other heavy, bulky items. May be required to physically restrain persons and effectively deal with stressful and potentially life-threatening emergency situations.
