The Role... The Port of Long Beach (Harbor Department) is seeking a
Marketing Manager in the Business Development Division. Under limited direction of the Business Development Manager, the Marketing Manager develops, coordinates, and implements marketing plans, programs, and activities designed to enhance existing business partnerships and develop new business opportunities. The Marketing Manager is tasked with overseeing the administrative functions within the division to support marketing strategies for continued commercial growth.
The Team... The purpose of the Business Development Division is to maximize Port of Long Beach revenue opportunities and sustain market share growth by engaging all customer segments, tracking industry trends, analyzing cargo data, identifying new business opportunities, anticipating market direction, and aligning our strategies to market conditions.
This is an unclassified (at-will) position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESHow you get to contribute... - Establish and maintain business relationships with customers and industry trade associations to promote and develop business opportunities for the Port of Long Beach (POLB) and obtain market intelligence, while keeping the assigned customer base advised of Port developments and initiatives.
- Oversight of the outreach/marketing function of the Foreign-Trade Zone 50 Program by developing and maintaining a call cycle to keep customers engaged.
- Deliver commercial presentations, conduct seminars/webinars, and participate in meetings with customers, external vendors, and other stakeholders.
- Supervise the administrative functions of amending and managing Port of Long Beach Tariff No. 4 (Tariff), including incentives, rate increases, and other Port initiatives and program management of the various tariff programs.
- Negotiation, project management, and oversight of industry event sponsorships, business development customer outreach programs, and FTZ workshops.
- Special event management, booth/trade show set-up and planning (staffing schedules, sponsorship deliverables, contract oversight, etc.) for Business Development Division’s signature events, Annual Customer Appreciation Reception, POLB Commissioners’ TPM Reception, IANA Intermodal Expo, TPM, etc.
- Prepare bid documents (RFPs, NIBs, RSOQs, etc.) for potential projects and contracts; establish an interview panel, develop scoring criteria for written and oral evaluations; negotiate fees; and execute contracts.
- Collaborate with the Communications Division on planning, creating, and executing advertising campaigns for the trade industry; media selection and contract preparation; and review advertising metrics to ensure campaigns are performing optimally.
- Identify trends, generate ideas, and develop strategic recommendations for the Port of Long Beach to pursue regarding commercial business and trade opportunities.
- Manage the division’s relationship with trade associations by managing/updating members as needed, provide sponsorship deliverables, coordinate staff/customer attendance to events/luncheons, periodically review association’s effectiveness and alignment to the division’s goals, and coordinate speaking opportunities for POLB executives.
- Support the section by preparing and monitoring the special events and programs’ budgets, assists in developing the section’s budget, and familiarity with the department and division’s budgeting process.
Serve as a key contributor to the Business Development Division’s marketing plan. - Performs other duties as requested.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEEducation: - Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration/Policy, International Business, Economics, Marketing, or a closely related field is required. Experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis; if utilizing this option, this would be four years to substitute for the degree, plus the five years of experience described below, for a total of nine years.
- Master's Degree in the above disciplines or closely related field is desirable.
- Certificate in supply chain logistics programs is desirable.
Experience : - A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in marketing or the maritime/logistics/transportation industry is required.
- Extensive marketing, communications, and customer profiling experience is required.
- A history of creating effective working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required.
- Strong track record of developing successful and innovative targeted marketing campaigns across industry channels is required.
- Proven ability to implement new programs or practices designed to enhance service and value is required.
- Strong technical knowledge, business writing, and presentation skills required.
- Knowledgeable about local and international maritime market conditions, global and regional trends in international trade, and top competitors’ strengths and weaknesses required.
- Government program management and budgeting experience is desirable.
